My understanding was that "PL-15" was referring to a next generation LRAAM with a distinct air intake to feed a ramjet engine and that this chopped-fin missile was a "PL-12x" derivative. So if this missile is the PL-15 then what is that new missile called?

The situation's not fully clear.

The "PL-15" has been used for a number of missiles, including the crop wing one carried by the J-10C, as well as the large LRAAM that was revealed last year, and apparently it has also been used to refer to the ramjet BVRAAM as well.

However, over the years I think the ramjet BVRAAM has primarily been called PL-21, or PL-12D (we are unsure if the two designations refer to the same missile, different missiles, or even if either designation was ever actually in use for the ramjet BVRAAM project). I don't think the ramjet missile has been called PL-15 by too many places, or at least not on this forum or CDF from what I remember.

The crop wing missile carried by the J-10C has been called PL-15 and PL-12C, but at present I think based on a combination of rumours and timing of various rumours over the last year or so, the current consensus is that the missile is called PL-15.

The large LRAAM revealed last year was briefly dubbed PL-15 (which was about the same time when the confusion about the crop wing missile's designation arose), but again, based on various rumours and timing of rumours, the current consensus is to call it PL-X.
