Cnair added some tidbits on the J-10A, saying it just entered service. What is the difference between the J-10 and J-10a?

As far as I know ... the regular J-10 in PLAAF-service is the "A" version ... !

It seems as if - following some reports - the initial model / prototype version powered by the originla WS-10 (nut the current WS-10A) was called only J-10.

Hmmm, let me try another attempt ...

I alwayws thought the regular J-10 in PLAAF-service is the "A" version ... but was always curious why the trainer was "only" called the S-version, as it seemed as if - following some reports - the initial model / prototype version powered by the originla WS-10 (nut the current WS-10A) was called only J-10 but now that makes much more sense to me. All previous (at least the prototypes, pre-prod. aircarfts and block 01-03 should be called J-10 and their trainers respectively J-10S.

Regarding the A-model operational "now" with the first division ... I think/guess this "now" is already some time ago and - IMO if I'm not completely wrong - could refer to the first sighttings of the updated models with SATNAV/GPS-dome behind the cockpit and IFR-capability ....

Maybe (just let me guess) previous delivered models esp. the ones at the 44. Division were then updated with this latest stuff and should now be something like J-10+ and J-10S+ ... and new delivered examples are J-10A and J-10AS.

Two similar fighters, the F-16C and J-10 both have similar dimensions (i.e: max take off weights, empty weights, and engine thrust), but the F-16's payload is 7700Kg, while the J-10's is 4500Kg. Why is there such a big difference in payload while they have relatively similar proportions to each other?
I guess it just shows the experience of American aviation industry. Also, which F-16c? there are a lot of F-16Cs out there.
I remember seeing J-10's empty weight closer to F-16 block 50/52. But since J-10 is delta wing, maybe the weight should have been more? I'll post it here. It's cool stuff.

Payload is only one of the performance parameters. The aircraft's speed and maneuverbility are important consideration too. All these must be taken together when accessing performance.

Considering the J-10 was originally supposed to be designed as an air superiority fighter this doesn't surprise me, and, just how often does a f16 carry its maximum weight? I remember reading the average warload for a fighter was around 3000kg, so the j-10 should be fine with what it has.

... just entered service in the FIRST DIVISION. Read more carefully! It even called it the 4th batch.

Actually he is correct. On Huitong's site, "J-10A" is bolded and differentiated from mere "J-10". Look at the title also, "10" and "10A" are differentiated.

Huitong means that J-10A just entered service and entered service with the first division. It might be the fourth batch of J-10's. I wonder how much is in a batch? Maybe 30, looking at the designation. Then PLAAF has 120 J-10s and now 40 J-10As.

Most likely J-10A is simply J-10 with Taihang engine (WS-10B?).

don't overthink it. We've seen some upgrades on the original batch of production J-10s. It's likely just a more modern avionics and radar. And I would think all the J-10s are probably at this standard now. After all, they had a year where they didn't produce any new J-10s. They should've had plenty of time to do the upgrades on existing J-10s.
