I thought Italy had the Ariete? There is little point in them getting the Leopard 2.
Ariete is no longer in production. The point of them getting Leo 2A7 is both a new better MBT and a numerical uplift from 200 old Ariete
-> 125 Leo 2A7 and 125 upgraded Ariete.

I think it is pointless to buy what is an obsolete tank at this point. Italy should just get into one of the next generation tank programs and modernize the Ariete. Italy does not share a border with the Union State so it is kind of pointless to spend too much money on the ground forces at this point anyway.

Do you mean that Leo 2A7 is obsolete? Because it is literally one of the best MBTs in the World.

Even though Italy does not border Russia or Belarus, they are obligated to protect NATO, which does share a large border with Russia and Belarus.

There's an increasing trend amongst European members of NATO of sacrificing some elements of a self-contained armed forces to unlock more funds for specific areas of specialisation. Given the infighting and consequent uncertainty with SCAF, the obvious area where Italy can be an important value-add to NATO whilst benefiting its own industrial base is in its contributions to GCAP. Let the Polish do the groundwork, Europe/NATO would love to have more 6th gen fighters
