Necromancy is an art, too!
In all seriousness, sorry for late answer. Noticed it right now.
It was found in trials by both the Russians and US vs Mig21 to be a match.
It was found to be more than a match against any fighter
willing(or w/o any choice but to) to engage. Otherwise, it often was a bit helpless. Not because it couldn't bite, but because it had to find an opportunity to do so. Unlike the migs, which always could at least force the fight onto their enemy(ability to win it depended on user, though)
Back in 1970s it was still ok...at least for those who had no choice.
After 1991 its combat value against the US/Israel is almost nil.
Even when upgraded mig-21s still keep certain value.
your point? What could they do? Iran has been locked out of late model 4.5 gens their air forces are made up of the scraps the Russians have slid them under the table and the remnants of the Iranian Imperial Air Forces.
I never said they could match the US or Israel for that matter against Iraq now they might be able to operate but that’s because Iraq is pretty much half dominated by them anyway.
But Iraq isn't even their enemy!
Lets switch to their point if view. Iran either has to invest into a decently sized, decently capable air force, capable of contending against the US at least on limited scale, or there is little point even trying.
That just fits all too well into American rulebook.
