Well , Mig-19 could take-off with without airstrip ,as we can see from video below . Landing was out of the question , but even VTOL aircraft need big ship (i.e. helicopter carrier at least) to land . At the time when J-6 was relatively modern China didn't have anything bigger then destroyer , so even true VTOL aircraft could not be used . On the other hand , onboard J-6 could be useful in some circumstances providing there is enough fuel to safely land on (J-6 has relativity short range)

The same way of launching aircraft was tried with the F-84F Thunderstreak and used with a considerable number of aircraft like guided missiles, best known of which is probably the Styx.
