Interesting: PLAAF once considered a J-6 VTOL

Well , Mig-19 could take-off with without airstrip ,as we can see from video below . Landing was out of the question , but even VTOL aircraft need big ship (i.e. helicopter carrier at least) to land . At the time when J-6 was relatively modern China didn't have anything bigger then destroyer , so even true VTOL aircraft could not be used . On the other hand , onboard J-6 could be useful in some circumstances providing there is enough fuel to safely land on (J-6 has relativity short range)

that is one brave Russian test pilot!
50 years ago there is no computer simulation. If you're the first guy up there, it's most likely also the first time it's done! I seriously doubt they were shooting pilotless rocket Mig-19s over the rails a few times over just to be sure it works...

In the 1950s the US experimented with and flew some amazing true VTOL aircraft.

Here's the Convair XVF-1:

I always like the Star fighter Conversion Idea. Basicly you remove the wings build a Triangular wing that is mounted on a shaft attached to the main engine. the Wing is built with large flaps that rotate to a set angle of attack the whole wing then spins on the shaft and generates lift like a helicopter's blades. once you get up to speed you lock the wing. was never built but cool idea.

I wonder will it work if the four hover system are actually not fix permanently to the aircraft. You used it to take off, then eject the hovering systems away when it us up in the sky. After mission, you landed on a nearby airstrip or was given two landing gear that was very much a water ski type of thing whereby you could land the aircraft on water?

If the fans are connected to the main engine as I surmise it's doubtful.
If the fans were powered by there own power source it's possible.

If the fan package has its own power source then it would be a expensive accessory to jettison.

On the other hand, the plane would undoubtedly perform like a lead pig with flapping ears if it tried to actually fly, to say nothing of maneuver, with those big fans attached.

Suddenly, I want to nickname this variant 豬八戒.

Even if its powered by the main engine it would still be. A pricy accessory. The transmission the fans structures its got to cost as much as the fighters.
