Perhaps you'd prefer the PAP to just gun down their citizens unarmed, preferably shooting them in the back as the would be suspects and alleged criminals run away and flee away from a potential arrest. Would that be humane and civilized for you?
Why would I want police to do that? If it comes to the point where PAP with polearms are to be deployed (meaning there are armed criminals to be subdued), then yes I would prefer them to have pistols, submachine guns, shotguns etc. as they are more effective. Regular patrolling police should have a taser and pistol, in my opinion, along with the ability to quickly call in additional firepower if needed.

As for the other replies: I have no issues with polearms being used at the Indian border, I was just speaking on police walking around with polearms.

Some interesting details on the new smart soldier system. Nothing we don't already know from various sources, but it's nice they're confirmed publicly.

The multifunctional monocular has a camera mode and can beam the video feed back to the squad leader's smart device (wrist terminal):

The company commander has access to video feeds from drones and other sources and can track each soldier's movement from his mobile command vehicle:

this might not change much at squad level, because everyone is close enough that what a soldier sees is what the squad leader sees. but at platoon/company level it starts to make sense, commanders can see what is going on at the front right away, it shortens the time for decision making because it cuts out the need for the scout to report back etc.

I wonder if you can LARP an RTS game with a civilian version.

It's often argued the polearm type weapons are the best, deadliest and easiest to learn melee weapon. A horse charging into a line of men armed with pointy spears doesn't continue to run into sed pointy spear, instead it'll try to go around or avoid the pointed object that it know will hurt it. In the case of the Indian border troops, they're kitted out in heavy clothing, bullet proof vest and most likely have gas masks and riot shields, these pointy pine apple polearms are the right tool for this very special situation of Indian melee brawls, simple tactics.

PAP deals with people like terrorists, not your average criminal. The city municipal has their own police force to deal with local crime.
PAP has crowd control duty besides counter-terrorism (dedicated crowd control aka riot police, as part of the major reforms post-1989, counter-terrorism comes much later), since not all local police force have the same budget and manpower poll, PAP provides such support where necessary.

how likely is it that the mars 2.0 or 3.0 AR systems will be implemented into the PLA in the near future?
