it seems not uncommon for Indian shipyard to launch ship without much of the superstructures completed. Building first AC is a long and difficult process. I wouldn't be surprised if it does not go on sea trial for longer than what Jeff stated. Considering that INS Kolkota was launched in 2006 and still has yet to be commissioned, we could be looking for a similar time line here.
Here's the progress on the island:

It is pretty well along and I believe will be lifted relatively soon.

The bigger issue is the back 20-25% of the ship where from the flight deck down six or eight levels, there is simply nothing built yet. A lot of the delays have been due (for both this vessel and the Kohlkatas) due to system they are getting from foreign suppliers and those things either taking too long, having problems, or in one case for the carrier, the transport actually having a wreck which damaged some equipment.

I believe we'll see the Vikrant completely launched in 2016-2017, and commissioned in 2019. By that time, the Virkamaditya will have been operating for 4-5 years with its squadron of 16 Mig-29Ks.

Explosion, fire rock Navy submarine

A huge explosion accompanied by a fire rocked an Indian Navy submarine docked in the high security Naval dockyard early on Wednesday, officials said.

The blast followed by a fire occurred shortly after midnight on the INS Sindhurakshak submarine.

Many sailors on board the submarine reportedly jumped off to safety.

“However, there is likelihood of some personnel being trapped inside. The details are being ascertained,” an official defence ministry statement issued at 3.15 a.m. said.

The details of other casualty figures were not immediately available though some injured sailors have been rushed to naval hospital INHS Ashvini in Colaba.

The cause of the explosion and blaze, as well as the extent of damage to the submarine and naval properties, is still not known.

At least 16 fire tenders of Mumbai Fire Brigade and Mumbai Port Trust were rushed to assist the naval fire brigade to douse the conflagration, the smoke emanating from which could be seen in many parts of south Mumbai.

A fire brigade official said that around 3 a.m., the blaze had been brought under control and prevented from spreading to other vessels docked in the vicinity.

The blast was first heard ashore by deputy chief fire office P.S. Rahandale who was on leave and attending a private engagement near the Gateway of India promenade. He immediately alerted the fire brigade and other emergency services.

I am astonished, how come till now neither Indian media nor their Govt have put the blame on Pakistan....

:D:D:confused:

Or blame China, for that matter? Both are the usual scapegoat.

Anyway, by the clip the explosion was pretty violent, looks like the torpedo payload gone off or something.

I think they might decide to scrap the sub altogether, judging by the scale of the damage. It's a shame really that she was refitted just a year ago.

The same kilo class submarine had a previous fire in 2010. Refitted in Russia in 2012.

It had also some problems when it was sailing back from Russia, and it could be result of bad quality control in Russian battery manufacturing factory.
