This carrier will be based at INS Kadamba, home to the Western fleet and as such the carrier that will see action against Pakistan when war breaks out, every carrier is a war machine but this carriers chances of seeing one is the largest, and as such India will have to build a carrier strike group which can screen from all angles and directions, this is serious business

What implications will it have, 16 x Mig-29K although not a war changing force will be of concern to the Pakistan high command, but I'm sure the militray planners have meticulously planned out how to counter this carrier

With permission to station fighter aircraft off the coast of Oman a Sqaudron of JF-17 equipped with anti-ship missiles would be the best chance of getting this carrier flush, bombs on deck is out of the question and a unlikely event so stand off missiles from range is really the best opition to excercise

But before any of that the Mig-29K need to be displaced using a diversionary attack, once the carrier strike group falls for it and goes after its target which could be a the PN surface fleet or a number of aircraft the suprise attack can begin from the unexpected angle, flying in from the West fighter aircraft would have the element of suprise and catch the carrier with very little air cover and and better still without its outer screen, being able to launch from 100-150km away 5 JF-17 can lunch 10 C802 with likely hit probability of 2 hitting and exploding, enough to cause damage to either force a retreat or abandon plan

16 Mig29K is a limited aviation force, with the inherit design flaws the launch and recovery rate as well as the sortie will not be relatively high, weakness that can be exploited well in time of war

And I don't think India can commit two carrier strike group to the Western theatre, one will always be East to counter a Chinese force with one carrier in re-fit at all times

India and Pakistan are now both (growing) nuclear powers. I doubt that we will see another India Pakistan war on the scale of those of 1947, 1965 and 1971. Perhabs there might be another war on the scale of Kargil 1999, but even that is for me highly doubtful. What is going to trigger the next war ? Terrorism ? Border skirmishes ? Are Indians willing to risk having nuclear weapons raining down on their cities for that ? Are Pakistani's ? I think not. Nuclear weapons will deter both sides from going to war. India didn't go to war when terrorists attacked the Indian parliament in 2001 and then blamed Pakistan for sponsoring it. Why ? In my view its because Pakistan has nuclear weapons and any conflict with Pakistan can escalate into a nuclear war.

The aircraft carriers of India are not about Pakistan but more about India's rise as a major powerhouse in the region and the world. And will be more useful in their strategic competition with China in the Indian Ocean and beyond.

INS Vikrant towed back into construction slip in March 2013

India Today said:
After much delay, the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), being built in Cochin, is ready for its launch on August 12. At the same time, the second carrier, INS Vikramaditya, will be undergoing extensive final sea trials in Russia.

While Vikramaditya should join the navy in early 2014, the aircraft carrier would take another three years. The 40,000-tonne aircraft carrier will cross a major development milestone when the ship would be launched by defence minister A.K. Antony, marking the end of the first phase of construction.

The launch would mean that the ship would be out of dry dock after completion of work related to fitting all underwater equipment like engines, gear box, shafting and diesel alternators. The construction of the complex warship was undertaken in two phases. The first phase, with a hiked budget of around Rs.3,000 crore, was originally scheduled to end in 2011 but delays in procuring good quality steel and an accident involving gear boxes unsettled the timeline.

Well, apparently they have gotten all of the engines and machinery installed. But I have not seen much progress on the exterior of the hull in well over a year. She was towed back into the construction slip in March. So, how much did they get done between March and August...in five months?

I guess they will "launch" her as she is, and then complete the work on the hull.

Most nations launch a vessel when the hull is complete and then outfit the vessel with the major sensors and weapons before trials. Then a year of trials and commissioning. For the US this is about a two year process. India is indicating that it will be five years before the Vikrant is operational meaning that they still have 2 or more years of actual construction to do.

I believe with all the delays, that they are launching so they can tell the public that they are making progress. I really do not believe she is not ready for what I would consider a typical or traditional a traditional launch.

.

This is correct but only partially, the Kargil War happened after the nuclear tests and downing of a Atlantique aircraft inside the Pakistan air space in 1999 followed by a long list of engagements and incidents

Nuclear weapons are a deterant but alone can't guarantee security in this region, anything less is unacceptable, additional capability need to be added, for example having second strike capability and longer range and more accurate missiles in the form of nuclear capable land attack cruise missiles

During high tensions as late as a few years back during the Mumbai attacks India can deploy a carrier group or a naval task force to show force against Pakistan, showing the world they can send a carrier strike group off a coast of another nation would mean very bad news for Pakistan and would give India much negotiating leverage for any longer term peace treaty, under such circumstances Pakistan has to be prepared to defeat such a hostile action if it remains to be a sovereign nation

Very nice chart, Equation. I had not seen it before.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but anyway, here goes.
I have heard that they will be armed with the CADS-N-1 Kashtan, but had not seen them on the vessel yet.

The Kashtan system has very impressive statistics. I believe that the "M" variety is the export variety. It holds 8 9M311 missiles ready to fire for each system and 24 more in an auto-reloader...so 32 missiles per system, and two GSh-30K 30mm CIWS guns per system.

So, if there are eight Kashtan systems on the Vikramaditya that would mean:

064 x 9M311 missiles Ready to launch
192 x 9M311 missiles in re-loaders
016 x GSh-30K 30mm CIWS auto cannons

That's a lot of self defense. A total of 256 9M311 missiles aboard.

Hey guys, this thread is about Indian Military News. All of this discussion about the Olympics and the IOC and the merits of each Olympics has NO PLACE HERE.

If you guys want a thread about Olympics, then simply start one in the Members Club Room and knock yourselves out about all the merits, pros, cons, etc.

But could we please get back on tpoic here?

Thanks.

No long ago the Indian army complained to their Chinese counterpart that there is drone spying going on in the border area. The Chinese replied that the Indians can shoot the intruding craft down if they so wish, the latter replied that the objects are too high.

Well, about the last bit they had been right..
