I have heard that USA is pressuring India to not develop long range icbms. That's why Agni 6 was probably put on hold. So that it doesn't offends its western partners.

India developing an ICBM capable of ranging even part of the Continental US would be the end of the American-Indian defense relationship.

They can't stop India from buying S-400s so how can they stop them from developing ICBMs?

That said, I don't think that India has a need for long range ICBMs. Their only major enemies (China and Pakistan) are already within range of their existing missiles.

I don't think that most important western countries care if their perceived ally/friendly nation builds an ICBM. Also, India has been somewhat slow on actually deploying their missiles, US militarys open source note that only handfull of Agni III (night firing test failed recently), Agni IV, Agni V missiles have been deployd, so they don't really threaten any countries other than China & Pakistan.

India will become threat only if their gdp over takes many western nations combined (5-10 trillion), then it most definetly turns into "regime" especially in eyes of anglosphere, but that will take at least a decade if not more. Countries like Britain & France used to rule world and still haven't really gotten over losing their empires, I think losing power has been most painful for brits who aren't on terms with the reality (despite what is being said). So yeah... they can handle Indian ICBM but won't take economic success well.

An solid fuel, Agni VII/Surya ICBM with a TEL will be much more of a threat to the United States than the DF-5 was to the US in the 1980s. Since India would have spent billions to build such an ICBM, it would be viewed as an unvarnished threat by Washington DC. India as part of the Quad cuts it some slack with America, but not THAT much slack.
