India has become the biggest country in the world this year, but conversely, its fertility rates have been in a steep decline for years. In reality, the reversal of population growth that manifested itself in China this year has already begun in India as well.

Why do they categorize birth rates in India according to religion? In other countries they might categorize it according to ethnicity. But this is the first time I'm seeing it analyzed from a religious standpoint.

In other countries like China, Japan, and Germany, birthrates are not counted by religion. Is religion so important in India, that it had to be considered in a birthrate study? Is religion really that important in a demographic study if India?

Might as well count it by caste. The genetic differences between the different groups are comparable to differences between Italians and Scandinavians due to years of prohibition of interbreeding between the different castes.

Absolutely yes, religion is more prominent than ethnicity in the middle east and South Asia. It is hard for population who's used to irreligiousness to understand, most of them see just religion just as quirky cultural tradition that people do sometimes, when many/most people living there believe it 100% with no caveats while basing their entire identity and life decisions around it.
