So, how did they boost trade by USD 40 billion? Is the US also buying "Indian" gasoline and diesel like the EU while feeling smug about themselves or what?

"With $588 million purchases in oil products, US becomes top buyer of India's refined petroleum goods
There has been an increase of 23 per cent in imports of petroleum products by the US as against last year as the country purchased $3.62 billion worth of petroleum products in the eight months to 30 November, 2022"

Figures.

Adani Total Meets Hindenburg’s Predicted Valuation With 85% Plunge in Stock

  • States’ EV adoption policy is latest headwind for Adani Total
  • Hindenburg warned of 85% downside in Adani Group’s shares
Nine months after the US short seller Hindenburg Research flagged a 85% downside in Adani shares, Adani Total Gas Ltd. has become the first of the group’s seven listed companies to achieve that valuation.
The shares of the conglomerate’s city-gas distributor slid as much as 2.6% to 575.7 rupees on Monday, taking losses from their Jan. 24 closing of 3,891.75 rupees to 85%.
A shame we can't short Indian companies.

A free trade deal with the EU would suck the air out of a lot of Indian industries. I doubt the Indians will do this.
Indian services are also less applicable to the EU than Anglo-Saxon nations. Because of the diverse languages used in the EU.
That's exactly right, which is why India has been unenthusiastic. Same reason why they didn't sign up for RCEP.

It seems they prefer trade deals with English-speaking Western countries first and foremost. Second-order countries are small and rich states (Gulf, Singapore) where there is already a large Indian diaspora and often fairly international (and English-speaking) environment.

For all the talk about replacing China's manufacturing sector with India in the Western press, it seems India is more comfortable just doubling down on services.

Roughly 42,000 migrants from India have crossed the southern border illegally during the fiscal year starting last October through September, according to data compiled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That is more than double the number from the same period the prior year, when crossings by Indians hit a historic high. An additional 1,600 have crossed from the northern border illegally—four times the number who crossed in the last three years combined.
Since 2007, the total number of illegal border crossings by Indians in a fiscal year has exceeded 5,000 only four times. Indians nearly all turn themselves in to Border Patrol, rather than being arrested while evading capture, because they want to ask for asylum in the U.S.

Personal Commentary:
This issue is not strictly limited to India-Bharat but also with China, as we have seen an increased influx of Chinese migrants entering into the U.S. via the southern border. There's a smuggling issue that pretty much takes advantage of people's economic aspirations, desperations and everything in between that there would be enough fools and dreamers to take a perilous journey to America.
