How do you know that the President of China is in town?

Big motorcades.

Jacob Zuma, a South African politician, travels around his own country with a 33-vehicle motorcade:

You were right. I apologize for my error. Dammit, I hate eating crow. What's wrong with all those other countries? Don't they know that they don't have $2.4 trillion dollars in foreign exchange reserves? Why are they wasting the taxpayers' money and proving me wrong?!

On top of it all, I've been beaten by someone with a bunny for an avatar. I need to find a rock to crawl under for a while.

Peace dude.

I'm not out to undermine your thread. I was just posting from my experience about the motorcades (and the innumerable bodyguards that accompany heads of state) my country gets on a regular basis.

Anyway, from my understanding, the size of a motorcade is dependent on 2 main factors:

1. The size of the delegation. Heads of states don't travel alone. They have plenty of advisers, aides, ministers/secretaries, etc. Also, depending on the purpose of travel, there may be a large number of accompanying business leaders (as in a trade delegation) or military leaders (military exchanges being the more common ones).

2. The level of security needed for the delegation. With a larger delegation, the security requirement goes up. Hence, the motorcade grows in size.

For the huge 71-car motorcade that Obama had in China, there may have been a very large group of business leaders in there. Some may have been trying to crack open the China market, whilst others may be there to press China on the exchange rate issue. There could also have been any number of diplomats to handle other issues (such as 6-party talks, human rights, Internet censorship, etc).
