Though there is a theory is that these people invested so much in their lives to dreaming and aligning to the US that they can't come to terms that their life was wasted or is a lie.

Same as south vietnamese in the west - they cannot accept that they were simply used as cannon fodder in a regional sphere of influence struggle, so they latch onto "upholding the ideology".
