Agreed, but I do think you chose a terrible example. Native Americans had their land literally stolen the way you just described. Anglo-American colonialists would make up some excuse for unsuspecting Native Americans to "temporarily" evacuate their homes for whatever made up reason. They would then never return while being relocated to some other location, typically an Indian Reserve, where their descendants live to this day. Indian Reserves are modern day concentration camps given a nicer sounding name to gloss over the fact that Native Americans were herded into these Indian Reservation / Concentration Camps, through their own version of unequal treaties.
When it comes to Hong Kong, they were also colonized, but unlike Native Americans, instead of Hong Kongers not trusting the colonists, they do not trust their liberators instead. This is where I blame China's central government hands off approach when it comes to Hong Kong. To this day, HK still has entrenched government officials who are actively undermining China. For example the British expatriate judges appointed for life in the Hong Kong judiciary. The English language prep schools with predominantly foreign teachers, which interestingly continues to be the primary source of future HK government officials and workers. It's even more interesting that these English education institutions churn out a disproportionate number of the most virulent anti-China, anti-Chinese, "we are not Chinese" type white-wannabes.
