Bloomberg still is selling fearmongering of the decline of Hong Kong due to the exodus but Beijing has already said that it doesn't care.
Hong Kong’s Exodus Is Real and Painful
The migration is accelerating and will likely be permanent. Officials and businesses are wrong to downplay the impact on a hub fast losing financial and global appeal.
You know what's funny about that article?
Very few of the quoted numbers are "real"
There aren’t enough timely statistics and Covid-19 travel barriers remain in place, affecting migration decisions.
Official estimates
to a parliamentary committee there put the expected BNO figure for the full year at around 120,000
The relevant quote from the document:
Witness D thought that the first year estimate of 120,000 arrivals was “broadly accurate” but was not convinced that numbers would tail off over time
So basically a random person said so...
I get that it's an opinion piece, but this person is really using the word "real" quite liberally.
Some other great bits:
For one, people four decades ago were leaving over concerns events might take a turn for the worse — but much of what they feared has come to pass
Opinions regarding Tiananmen aside, it cannot be argued that it was an iconic moment in recent Chinese history. So this person is saying the national security law is equal to tanks rolling down the street... Did the author get the memo that PLA soldiers are under orders not to wear uniform outside facilities at all times?
the
that attempts to right historical wrongs by offering sanctuary and a path to citizenship for more than 5 million of the former colony’s residents.
So the author's idea of historical wrong is the return of territory that was taken by force, under the pretenses of continuing to deal drugs? Making it right only requires giving people born before 1997 an out! No wonder the PM of Canada thinks all he has to do for all the dead indigenous children is say "sorry" and lower some flags! It's the British way!
Also I suppose the author does not consider the following "historical wrongs":
- The unwritten apartheid policy until the 70's (no Chinese judges, senior police officials, never any governors)
- Massacre of hundreds of villagers in the early years of British rule and dozens killed by British police during the riots of 1967.
Meanwhile under the tyranny of the CCP
- All CEs were locally born in HK
- Despite intense months long rioting, not 1 single death directly caused by police
