Re: Your Favorite Foods...What you like to eat

Anyway how often do you guys eat Western Meals?

We eat it too often, as in everyday. We live kind of far away from China town. We only go to China town at most once a month :( So we cook and eat Western meal everyday. In fact, I'm very fond of Bobby Flay's cook books. I also like Alton brown's recipes.

Many of our Chinese friends can't understand how we can live without Chinese food for so long (many of them drive an hour each way to China town weekly to get their Chinese grocery). Well, my answer is: I got rid of my Chinese-food-addiction in college :D. when you are in college, you eat whatever you can find and whenever you find it :nana:. It just so happened that most of the stuff we could find was burgers and pizzas.

I read somewhere that Asians as in Japanese have a high incidence of cancers of the stomach and other areas. They suspect its due to much salt and soya sauce in the diet. So I guess you Northern Chinese can adopt the expression, "death through Soya":D

The salt intake in most Asian countries are not too much more than countries like U.S so I doubt it's the salt. I have heard something about link between fermented food (soy sauce in this case) and cancer. However, I'm not sure if this has been established. If this is the case, what about chese and wine?

Anyway, I think I love soy sauce as much as I love chocolate. Both make me happy :D

ENEMY! You guys stole the provincial capital position from us. Like I said back in the day, the only good Chinese food here is from family. Two days ago I was hungry and desperate so I bought this combo thing from a Chinese restaurant, god it was awful.

My personal experience: any Chinese restaurant with "dynasty", "empire", "kingdom", "palace" or "panda" in its name should be avoided at all cost. If you go in a Chinese restaurant and find "beef brocoli" on its menu, RUN!!!

At 9:30 PM August 12th, I have finally finished college. I destroyed my final for my Accounting Capstone. Right now I am in shock, but I am also hungry.

I've still got a couple more years of university to go. Fortunately across from my residence is a plaza with like 10 restaurants, half of which are Chinese. Guess what that means?!

Official guidelines to picking a good Chinese restaurant:
1. Avoid ALL Mom and Pop restaurants.
2. If you are in a mall and the choices are Pizza and Chinese, choose Pizza.
3. DO NOT attempt to try "Hong Kong Restaurant".
4. Except for buffets, avoid all other restaurants named after Chinese cities.
5. Egg FooYuen must not be present on the menu.
6. If in Vermont, DO NOT order chow mein.

(And boy, I can make a list for Japanese restaurants also....)

Anyone been to Mr. Chow's or PF Chang?

The Chinese food there is very bad! Cantonese? Where do you go to school now?

Tea eggs? I must say, being a Southerner, we have always thought that was a Taiwan only sort of snack.

Dam, now that I think of it, all the good Chinese food here are Cantonese. All the other cuisines are rare, expensive, and/or not that good...

Well, the saying is that cooked starches, especially rice, causes cancer.....

Almost never. My mom sometimes do a spaghetti or steak, but that's about it.
And to distinguish, I probably eat more burritos in a year than European cuisine.
My parents always complain that except for Cantonese, other cuisines are too expensive....... Not having realize that Cantonese restaurants are just too cut throat and prices have been steadily rising everywhere else since forever.....

Ves: Dude, don't you guys have Asian supermarkets? We have tons of them here and Chinatown is the place to avoid!

Hmm, what are Gou bu li (Dogs wouldn't eat?) and Jianbing guozi? I've heard of the names but never knew what they are.
At 9:30 PM August 12th, I have finally finished college.
Congratulations!

Go Bu Li Baozi is a famous Baozi joint in Tianjin, I forgot the whole story behind it, but I think it is in wiki.

although Beijing is very close to Tianjin, I've never had the pleasure to taste the authentic Gobuli :( We have a place here in Houston that claims that they have authentic Gobuli. We had it once and it did not impress me at all.

The equation for "Authentic" A=Authentic For all A in America: A=Real Cuisine-95%, therefore a 100% real cuisine in America turns to only 5%. I have only had real Chinese food outside my home once.

We have a HUGE Chinatown in Houston: about 6 supermarkets, each with its own shopping center, along with thousands of other stores. but we don't have many Asian places outside of Chinatown. Well, let me put it this way: outside of Chinatown, we don't have any Asian places that Asians want to go :D

To go to Chinatown, we have to pass the most congested area in houston, which itself is usually considered to have the worst traffic congestions in the nation. It's become such a hassle, eating Western food is way more convenient to us.

Of course, to my parents, we are just plain lazy since they drive 2 hours each way to go to Chinatown once a month to get their meat, sauces and "exotic" veggies.
