Why don't you collect your own, we do.. Over In NZ there are abalone farms, but they have not been as successful as the mussel farms, something to do with fertility, but should they get the technique right, the prices might come down

It have to be dried and process and then when ready prepare by a real chef :D By the way the bigger they get the higher the price. Last I heard 1 lb of top quality Japanese dried abalone ( 3 pieces per lb dried ) can fetch $10,000 USD due to the rarity of such large abalone. They said 2 pieces per lb will be almost impossible to fine and purchase ouch.

Dude, the myth is that the off-the-road stuff are once in a while stuff and not everyday, not that we don’t eat it……

They got Thanksgiving down South? Thought it was just a NA thing…. But this is an international forum, so please be minded that not only is English the language of use, but also that Turkey is available only in North America, the rest of us having goose or duck. :D
But seriously, a dog is a delicacy…… not an everyday meal…. And I would be disgusted if people do treat it as such….

Koreans also eat dog, however.
A question: for those of you who personally know Chinese people who has eaten dogs, can you find anyone who has had dog more than once? It's not that it's not tasty. I've heard it's actually extremely tasty. But it's so exotic that no one gets a chance to try them often.
My uncle said that on a trip back in ’92, he loved it, but he eat too many dog meals back-to-back that he felt full for the next 10 years…

Even though I have not eaten dog, I left HK when I was really young. I remembered that dog meat have always been banned in HK. I was told that you need to traveled to the New Territories to have a dog fest. You do not eat your pet, I heard their only serve specially breed chow dog. Also it is expensive I heard. In HK they cook it like Cantonese Lamb stew. I remember a saying of how good it taste, it said "When the dog stew is stimmering, even the monks are tempted" or something like that.

Yea, you can find dog-food in NT. (I lived in the hills by Sheung Shui when I was young.) (Our neighbor’s old dog took off. But I thought it was a goat then…)
Yeap, you simmered it like goat. Star anise, ginger. In some case, with more serious herbs (Don’t know their English name, but I think it’s similar to the herbs used in Bah Gook Teh.)
I think the Monk saying has been around for a while.

Be advised: If your body is warm/hot/on fire (Chinese medical term 熱/熱氣)(like, you are prone to acne and pimples… even when you shouldn’t be) avoid/ don’t eat too much of the stuff. Your nose would get a rash, and if you are dating a Chinese, you can kiss her/her goodbye because no amount of makeup will cover your instant pimples AND your nose will become the Red River. (The saying goes that perverts nose bleeds when seeing a hottie…. Not even whistling is as indicative as a nose bleed.)

It is a freaking good body warmer though.

---
I know the Catholics don’t eat meat on the last Friday of each month, but I have never heard that carnivores are banned…. Makes little sense if you ask me and plus, the Russians eat bear…
----
Why’d they ban bird’s nest down there? It’s not killing anything…. Hasmak banned too?

Dried scallops are relatively cheap (But more expensive than dried shrimp.). I think you just dry fresh found scallops in the sun….. heavy sun….. definitely not here. Good delicate seafood flavor and springy texture. Don’t think they add anything, otherwise it would ruin the flavor.

2 hours South of here there is also a small abalone industry. And with a license, you can scuba and pick your own 24 abalone/year, 3 per trip….. Big abalones, but quality wise they aren’t that great…. No flavor….

I'll have to correct you on that We have Turkey down here, I think it has become the most common centepiece food for Christmas Dinner after ham and lamb.

Koreans also eat dog, however.

I don't know if I'm correct in thinking this but Koreans seem to eat a particular dish that leaves a strong after smell on them, a bit like what curry can do.. Is it Kimchee? Or am I completely wrong and that its some Korean Dude walking around with a Korean brand chest rub.

They consider it to be a agricultural hazard. Whats Hasmak?

Another thing that was banned for a period was those 100year old eggs?
Theyre really black looking and totally repugnant. My Neighbour use to make his own when they were banned.

Wow, never thought such a tasteless bird could go off the Western Hemisphere... Nice to know. Thanks! Anywhere else the big bird has traveled to?

Don't think it's the kimchee.....Kimchee doesn't leave a smell, does it?

Agricultural hazard? Wut Da Blink? Aren't those imported anyway?
Hasma....雪蛤膏 Goes hand in hand with bird's nest...

LOL, they banned those too....... And I am pretty annoyed Andrew Zimmern skipped the stuff in Taiwan and we never got to see him enjoy it...

So, what exotic stuff do you guys have access to (or you culture have) that other parts of the world don't have?

1/ Gooey Duck.

These giant molluscs are prized in many Asian cultures for their potent aphrodisiac “properties “and surprisingly delicate flavour.( So if you should ever have ahem... problems of a certain nature , drop us a line and ill send you a sackful.) They reckon a bulldog couldnt chew it off:DThey are however almost unknown to the rest of the world, despite having been fished commercially in New Zealand
To describe Geoduck as phallic is like saying the Pope is a bit religious. They are more like giant, aquatic penises (penii?), complete with a horribly leathery “foreskin” and obscene squirting action.

2/Bluff Oysters, Totally different to the common pacific Oyster

3/Mutton Bird

4/Whitebait

The version I've heard was about the Gods, as in Shen2 Xian1, not monks.....

The movie "shaolin Temple" had a scene where a bunch of monks showed down a dog.

I think Japanese eat it the sushi style. Supposedly, it's pretty tasty, according to that Dirty Job guy.

We can still get it here in the States. but my mom says it is too hard to tell if it's authentic. Some people fake it with some sort of sphagetti

They love it, we hosted a Japanese rugby team two yrs ago and we gave them some to try. From then on they weren't interested in the scenic sites, just point them in the direction of the local Bro......:D

Seriously they are extremely nice, I dont do any fancy cooking with it I just boil it like one would a lobster, (not too long) wait for it to cool and slice it like you would with salami. The taste really grows on you.
