Almost all areas China is already better than Russia, you name it .... Electronic, shipbuilding CNC machine, computer, construction, infrastructure and all consumer products Chinese already ahead of Russia. The only area Russia still better than China is only in High Performance engine and some metallurgy technology. Even for satellite communications, spy satellites design, rocket design, manufacturing and quality control China is way ahead of Russia
surely you don't want to compare Chinese car to the Russian ones .... just one simple example
recent Russian satellites.. cough... failures.. cough
Soviet era though... what Russian space capabilities left today probably not toe nail worth of Soviet era
KJ-2000, 200 are all indigenous AESAs mass produced while russia has yet to put an airborne aesa of any kidn in service, J-10 and J-11B has shown the chinese to be capable enough in FBW, and the chinese seem to be better placed to develop new electronics and avionics expertise (
) -- military aviation avionics and electronics is possibly the area where China is most ahead of Russia in, imo.
That isn't to say Russian avionics are bad, just that when we're comparing aspects of the two country's aviation industries avionics is the biggest disprecancy in china's favour.
And what did you mean by "aerodynamics" in your earlier post? Because you can only really judge that based on the wind tunnels and computing power each side has, and that area should be rough parity or slightly in china's favour at this point and time. Also shouldn't materials be paired with structures/maufacturing? ... In which case I say there is parity for fighter aircraft but china still hasn't mastered mass producing large planes. Re materials (do you mean composites?) it's honestly hard to judge because we hear nothing of development from either side in this area. kk
this is kind of a dejavu from Keypub, same topic same talk
i fully agree that China's electronic/aircraft avionics industrial capabilites and prospect's are ahead of Russia's, but IMHO just by a slight difference, stemming from China's stronger overall electronics industry/economy
about aerodynamics, one would be inclined to say it's a near parity (and capability wise it might actually be), but if you look into the breadth and depth of accumulated knowledge and experience of Russia, it's almost like saying CNSA is as good as NASA on space exploration, a few things i want to point out
1. until a decade ago, Russians are still teaching China how to make fighter planes, and they probably still doing it now
2. SAC have only managed to chew down on the Flanker design until very recently, itself a 30 year old design, with its next gen fighter as a graduation from it
3. compare China's capability in designing large passenger/cargo a/c airframe vs Russia's
4. China is on the tipping point of parity, in 5-10 years we will see it come up with actual planes (like the boxwing UAV, J-20) which are actually unique capabilities that the Russians don't have, but now not yet
5. the continued emphasize of maneuverability on PAK FA, combined with strong high speed performance, shows their confidence on their capabilities at hand
more about PAK FA, (sticking my neck out here) among the three , IMHO it's the one with the least compromise on the aerodynamic department, i'm not saying the best, because there is no such thing as the best aerodynamic. F-22 is about uncompromised stealth, and monstrous engine. J-20 is a mixed bag, PLAAF style.
and finally China does have expertise/capabilities in large aircrafts, it's just not translated into a large military transport yet, that would also explain China's capabilities in structures/manufacturing
Russia's is not slouching off on aerospace front as well, certainly not at the vigor and pace of China's, but there are still many expertise and specialties left in Russia.
