Sorry Jeff ... I don't get it! ....... why is important regarding missiles hanging out on the pylons? ..... is it a new capability of H-6K ?
Oh, it's not that it is new capability to carry ALCMs under its wings.
It's more of a combination of two things.
First, the H-6K can carry six of them. Second, this is showing the AK-D20 missiles in actual exerciese over the Souith China Sea. IMHO, this is an important training exercise for the CHinese, but it also sends a clear message.
AK-D20 is a generation of modern Chinese long range ALCMs in the same class of American AGM-86 and Russian Kh-55, designed to attack a variety of fixed, high-value targets, and do it at long range.
Based on CJ-10/DH-10 land-based cruise missile which earlier adopted some Russian Kh-55 technology, the first KD-20 ALCM entered the service with PLAAF in the late 2000s (initially called YJ-100) using the dedicated H-6M missile carrier.
Now, powered by a more fuel-efficient turbofan engine, the AK-D20 chas a longer range from 1,500 to well over 2,000 km. It is able to perform eoither as a convetnional precision guided weapon, or a strategic weapn when armed with nuclear tipped missiles.
Anyhow, to me, that the WOW factor in this.
