H-6 Bomber Aircraft Discussions

i haven't kept in touch here. Are they still produce H-6K at this point or has H-6N production taken over? It seems like if H-6N can both carry the single large BM on the belly or 2 KD-21s + get refueled, then you'd want to be producing more H-6N.
agreed, the additional range from refueling gives it more operational flexibility in terms of outflanking enemy AD coverage, and hit targets further out like Guam and Darwin with greater payload. H-6K is also 20 year old design, I am sure even if it is in production now there are some modifications.

Maybe a bizarre question, but... A friend told me that he (probably) read somewhere about the Chinese testing the H-6 bomber as a carrier of air-to-air missiles. Please, can anyone confirm that or provide a link? Thanks.

The question isn't just bizarre, but out-of-date as well.

China already has H-6s that can carry cruise missiles since 2010 (i.e. H-6K), if not earlier with a less capable variant.

He asked about H-6 being used to carry air to air missiles, rather than cruise missiles.

TBH I've toyed around with the idea as well -- for example, H-6K carrying PL-17s on dual or triple racks.
H-6Ks et al do have decent range and altitude, but I imagine their speed would leave something to be desired in terms of maximizing the benefit of the AAMs.

I don't get it. Cruise missiles? Of course, I know, but I was talking about air-to-air missiles.

Thanks. Any detailed info about that, please? I would like to see the source that my friend mentioned.

I said I toyed with the idea (i.e.; it's an idea I thought of myself) -- but the next line after I said that basically it probably would not be particularly viable.

There is no particular credible source or rumour about equipping H-6Ks with AAMs that I am aware of.

You'll have to ask your friend what they were talking about or if they had a source, and then assess the source's credibility yourself..

No problem, buddy. :)

Thanks. I asked him, according to him, probably it was some forum, but he's not sure.
