Paris: French arms exports rose 18 percent in 2014, according to a defence ministry report published Tuesday, the country’s best export performance for 15 years.
France sold 8.2 billion euros ($9.1 billion) of weapons last year, mainly due to clinching five “large” contracts (defined as more than 200 million euros).
These large contracts represented a total of 4.79 billion euros — a gain of 71 percent compared to the previous year.
The positive figures should continue in 2015 with contracts to provide 24 Rafale combat jets to Egypt and the same amount to Qatar already in the bag.
The figures put France “solidly” in fourth place in terms of global arms exports, the report said, behind the United States, Russia and China.
France’s main markets over the period 2010 to 2014 were the Middle East (38 percent), followed by Asia (30 percent).
After that came Europe (13 percent), the Americas (11 percent) and Africa (four percent).
The top French client over the period was Saudi Arabia, which snapped up 12 billion euros worth of weapons over the period — including three billion dollars bought to help the Lebanese army.
Then followed India (around six billion euros), Brazil (just under six billion), the United Arab Emirates (four billion), the United States and Morocco.
President Hollande announced a spending increase of €3,8B in the 2016-2019 timeframe. Of that, €1,5B will be used for equipment.
There will likely be a C-130 purchase. There will be 7 more Tiger AHs and quicker NH90 acquisition. The last 3 MRTTs will also be accelerated.
The Lafayettes will recieve new sensors. And there's progress on the design of three new intermediate frigates. Lighter verions of the multi-mission FFGs.
Also 25 new Talios LDPs for the Mirage & Rafale and a third optical spy sat in cooperation with Germany.

Four FREMMat different stages of construction at DCNS Lorient Shipyard
For DCNS, the FREMM programme currently involves the construction of ten frigates, eight of them for the French Navy. Six of these are to be delivered by 2019 and the remaining two frigates, equipped with extended anti-aircraft capabilities, will be delivered before 2022. Two other were sold for export clients: the Royal Moroccan Navy and the Egyptian Navy.
The delivery of the FREMM Provence takes place at a time when the FREMM programme is powering ahead on the DCNS site in Lorient. To date, three FREMM frigates are under construction and one is being prepared before being delivered:
• The FREMM Aquitaine, first in series, delivered in 2012.
• The FREMM Mohammed VI, for the Royal Moroccan Navy, delivered in 2014.
• The FREMM Provence, delivered today, 12 June 2015.
• The FREMM intended for the Egyptian Navy, formerly the FREMM Normandie, will be delivered in summer 2015.
• The FREMM Languedoc will make its first sea outing in autumn 2015.
• The FREMM Auvergne is currently in the final stages of construction and will be launched in September 2015.
• The FREMM Bretagne is currently being assembled.
