Neat if they do it. the French Air Force Currently operates something like 14 C130's with the coming of the A400M those C130's would be opened up for retirement modification to another role.

The Us is still the only nation to operate a large counter Insurgency air frame type like the AC130 Although there is the potential for others. Given the French and NAto operations in Africa of Late it seems possible they may have deemed such a type a need. The Newest of the AC130W stinger II and AC130J ghostrider have provisions for bombing in the form of hellfires, Griffin missiles, Viperstrike and SDB's along side the 30mm cannons.

Very interesting. There has long been the thought that the Russians had such a system.

If they have to break the surface with the mast, to acquire and launch, they will be immediately found.

It would be better if they could develop a system to send a very small device to the surface to check the threat and acquire basic targeting, then have those AAW missile launched from below the surface and ejected like a sub launched Harpoon is.

Imagine a DE/AIP, creeping along 20+m below the surface, hearing aircraft above and releasing a device that communicates either wirelessly or acoustically with the sub (ie. no tether) and that basic info is uploaded into one or more AAW missiles. Then the sub raises its mast with the launcher to perhaps 10m depth and then launches the missiles from there. Now THAT would be a total game changer. The ASW helo or aircraft would never see a mast break the waves.

I like such a device however just to play devil's advocate if such a device were to become mainstream then wouldn't the search aircraft be looking for such a device also?
If they can pick up the mast of a sub surely they can also pick up such a device floating on the surface and know the controlling sub is nearby and take both defensive measures and launch offensive weapons accordingly.

Plans to sell US Reaper drones to France advanced Monday as Congress raised no objections to the contract, Pentagon officials said.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees foreign military sales, had notified Congress on June 27 of the proposed contract, and lawmakers voiced no opposition during a 15-day review period.

"Congress did not propose any joint resolution of disapproval. The case can proceed to be offered," Lorna Jons of the DSCA told AFP.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian had announced on June 11 plans to buy 12 Reaper aircraft from the United States, a purchase worth about $874 million, or 670 million Euros.

An initial two drones, currently in production by San Diego-based manufacturer General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, are due to be delivered to France by the end of the year.

The robotic aircraft will repace Harfang drones, which are technologically less advanced.

The NATO-led air war in Libya in 2011 and the French military intervention in Mali this year have underscored France's shortage of surveillance drones, which have transformed warfare in the past decade since being introduced on a large-scale in the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

About time. Reapers will be a good ISR asset for Mali and North Africa operations

Charles de Gaulle carrier refit

:)
This was a six month refit...which in the grand scheme of things is not a major refit.

If they ever do a major overhaul, refit, and service life extension...with a potential reactor core refurb, then they will be looking at two years.

And that is the inherant weakness of a single carrier force.

Any major damage, repair, or refit like that will mean that the French Navy has no carrier or fixed wing capability for the duration of that long refit/repair.

IMHO, the Friench desperately need to look at a second carrier to give themselves the sustainability and flexibility they enjoyed when they had the Clemenceau and Foch operating together.

is not a major refit.
Yes, in french " indisponibilité pour entretien intermédiaire (IEI) " between 2 IPER.

Major refit in french : " IPER (Indisponibilité Périodique pour Entretien et Réparations)", take 18 month, the autonomy of the reactor is 7.5 years. For USN CV is RCOH.

The " CDG " are two K 15 nuclear reactor identical those of Triomphant SSBN which has only one, power 41500 cv/30500 kw.

There was no built a new reactor for reasons of economy, in more for one ship.

But therefore the CDG is a bit underpowered, a little, max speed 27 n.

IMHO, the Friench desperately need to look at a second carrier to give themselves the sustainability and flexibility they enjoyed when they had the Clemenceau and Foch operating together.
Operationnal 5 years on 7.5.

An anecdote, an old ship was being towed on the drydock front, to enhance security, the French sailors malignant ! hehe:D

French Navy Air Defense Destroyer Chevalier Paul (D621) deploys to the Syrian coasts
oi05yhP.jpg

The French Navy is deploying one of its two Horizon class Air Defense Destroyers to the Eastern Mediterranean according to French weekly Le Point. The Chevalier Paul (D621) will join the four US Navy Guided Missile Destroyers and an undisclosed number of US and UK submarines already in the area. The role of the French Destroyer would be to provide air defense for the fleet, as well as air cover for coalition warplanes should they get involved in an air assault.

Horizon class Destroyers are advanced warships dedicated to air defense missions. They usually deploy with 32 Aster 30 missiles for long range interception and 16 Aster 15 missiles for medium range interception. The vessels are also fitted with 8 MM 40 Exocet Block III, the latest version of MBDA's anti-ship missile.

To guide the missiles, Chevalier Paul is fitted with a powerful tri-dimensional radar capable of detecting targets more than 200 kilometers away. The main mission of this class of ship is the protection of aircraft carriers, capital ships or littoral infrastructures from threats coming from the air.

It is worth noting that during the campaign in Libya, Chevalier Paul conducted several coastal fire support missions with its two Oto Melara 76mm guns. This type of mission however is unlikely in Syria given the current context and because of the presence of advanced Russian made supersonic anti-ship missiles in the Syrian ****nal (P-800 Oniks).

French and Americans are both on thier own now

it's not like UK would bring massive power to the area and change the outcome but the political support was important

But I think it's a good thing UK has shown that they can act alone and don't just follow the US into everything and anything

It's what you call a dynamic relationship, we were asked we studied the situation and we decided what we wanted to do

Everyone respects that
