first let’s recall what was the RN’s last Cap fighter? Oh wait the Harrier that can’t break the Sound barrier.
Oh wait what platforms is F35 replacing? F16 a fighter targeted as a lighter platform, F18 a fighter aimed to the same and Harrier.... hmmm machines that although they can break the sound barrier don’t super cruise nor are classed as air superiority machines.... hmm. Gee wouldn’t be great to have a fighter to fill those higher range... like F22, F15 and F/A18E... and F-XX.... huh..

Pork is standard in any government but the numbers were set by the USAF USN and USMC. Pork is when something that isn’t asked for is forced on. Like when Obama cancels the Constellation program and the Senate created the Space Launch System. The term gets overused as does Lemon.but we have Hundreds of pages of you calling it a lemon and AFB, Jeff, others including myself pointing out the counterpoints on dates information or unnecessary requirements set by armchair Generals like yourself.
ambitious yes, and frankly we should have gotten more Raptor’s instead of rushing F35 but hindsight is always 20/20 and saying I told you so is so tempting.
it’s not three in one it’s three built with some shared parts.

That requirement was exceptionally ambitious for any aircraft at the time. Still is. I challenge you to find any air force that can match it.

All planes have some form of operating limitations during tactical employment. The notion that an aircraft can simply go supersonic regardless of its operating conditions are not supported by facts but rather out of ignorance on the subject.

An aircraft's ability to transition from sub sonic to supersonic is generally limited by three conditions; (a) operating altitude; (b) weight; and (c) draq index. Any discussions on this subject without reference to those conditions is at best misguided and at worst useless. In other words, any aircraft whether it is US, European, Russian or Chinese that can go supersonic without limitation is a myth.

First up, altitude changes the condition in regard to supersonic speed due to air density and temperature.

The F-35 is in effect a next generation replacement for both the F-16 and F-18. The question is how would it compare against these two platforms?

As an example, the F-18 E/F in maximum AB cannot exceed mach 1.0 in level flight below 10,000 feet even in clean configuration (without external stores) - source : Flight Journal Page 17, F-14 vs F-18 June 2020 edition.

In the case of the F-16. the contrast is even more profound. A common standard load out of a F-16C has a draq index close to 150.

In such a configuration, a F-16 is unable to achieve supersonic speed using maximum AB at 10,000 feet.

At 40,000 feet, the F-16 is only able to achieve supersonic speed with a weight not exceeding 28,000 lbs. It will need close to 5 mins of AB burning 1386 lb of fuel i.e. 10 % of its fuel. Given that a standard configuration weigh 36,000 lbs, the tactical condition that it can go supersonic is very limited.

All planes have tactical limitations. Just because there is a reported limitation on the F-35B/C model does not make it a lemon. In any case it should also be noted that those issues could not be replicated and is a one off event.
