You don't need a "War Chariot" unless you've got a "War Horse" to pull it, those carriers are no doubt "War Chariots",,, but if you eliminate the F-35C from the stable, you have effectively rendered the Ford class useless in the very Hostile 5gen anti-aircraft environment. If you or Greenert or Trump were to cancel the F-35C and replace it with the "Advance Hornet", you have effectively rendered the Ford class as old slow "oxcarts" and the F-18 is the "OX".
Its not the J-20, FC-31, or PAK-FA that we have to worry about, its the very highly developed S-300, S-400, and S-500 that are beginning to "proliferate" around the world? for instance on Hainan Island, and all those little spits of land that China is currently developing and arming in the SCS. Samo, Samo, in Syria, Crimea, and all around Europe! Those anti aircraft batteries are very, very cheap to buy compared to a full on 5gen fighter aircraft, so its an economic war to begin with. The much cheaper F-18 on the other hand will be easily overwhelmed in that hostile air environment, and I doubt anyone would send those aircraft and their pilots to what will no doubt be a 50/50 chance of mission/aircraft loss???
The Navy is in love with the idea of autonomous aircraft to operate off those carriers, but even stealthy autonomous aircraft will die in great numbers, because they are nowhere near the capability or capability of manned aircraft.
The F-35C is currently the most important aircraft in the Navy, as only the F-35C will be able to pull the weight of those Ford class in a meaningful way. We are going to deploy our carriers to the real "hot spots", we need an aircraft that will be able to act as CAP, and that more importantly will be able to "project power" with its organic air arm! That won't be likely if you're trying to rely on last centuries success story, and no doubt the F-18, and Super Hornet have been and continue to be a great success.
The F-35C is the only Naval Aircraft currently on inventory that will ensure this continued success, the opposition has moved ahead and the threat is growing, our little games in the desert have depleted our resources, and provided a sufficient distraction that we no longer have our "eye on the ball"??
