Long time... but some says YF-23 except for agility better than F-22 a bit more stealth, range for weapons load more difficult coz pics with show AIM-120A and after for F-22 can have 6 LR AAMs internaly the AIM-120C was built initialy F-22 can host only 4 AIM-120A with wings more large of 8 cm 53 vs 45 cm same lentgh, same diameter.

Can be interesting but for conversations better going on

:)

We bought the right airplane, no doubt in my mind, but the YF-23, without OVT, without all the "supermaneuverability" would be a very fine airplane for the 2020s moving on into the new century. Its time to simplify and solidify, and move our Air Force into the new century, stealthy, fast, simpler, and ready to rock in roll!

One I have learned never dismiss anything I remember the B1 was supposed to be approved by Carter but instead got cancelled it was not until Reagan did we see the Bone in its current form so I think we shall have to wait and see on this one too I say just about even money we see a different price on the F35 before long though that is almost certain and seeing as we reading and talking about the F18 only here I wonder if its strictly the C model that is in question

Barack Hussein Obama is Jimmy Carter II, Donald Trump will hopefully find somebody to tell him the truth about the F-35 VS F-18. The F-18 and Super Hornet are great airplanes, they are NOT well suited to the future battlefield. The F-35 in each of its 3 versions is a game changer, the F-35B has already brought the Wasp, and other smaller carriers into real relevance beyond what the Harrier ever could, they are fielding a front line aircraft that will be able to go out and defeat the enemy, not just manage to put up a struggle, but to dominate the battle space about them!

but
Exactly how Trump can end the F35 and save $15 billion or more per year for 30-50 years while improving US military capability

This article is written by a Politico writer, and is 69% KRAP!, the F-35 is complicated, but lying and stating the F-35 cannot cannot defeat any 4 Gen is a "Bald Faced LIE!". The F-35 is a winner, it is a game changer, and whether or not Lockheed or Boeing are "HAPPY", we better all be about building and fielding the best fighter, for the lowest reasonable price. That will be expensive, and it will be up for negotiation, but NO the F-18 is not gonna be the best ride for this new century, we intend to win, not be "also rans".

The Navy has been dragging its feet, the Naval Aviators are sold on the F-35C for their carriers, but Navy has a deeply ingrained resentment against aviation, they can not wait to get to their Unmanned aircraft, and in my opinion they are drop dead wrong!

The new head of the Joint Chiefs will fix that!

OK to cut the long story short: I think the Obama administration way too long listened to fairy tales like this: Nov 3, 2016

and the Obama administration kept listening when it knew it had been a fairly tale, pouring money into it in a socialistic way; let's wait and see how much time the F-35 Program gets 'for completing development and flight testing of Block 3F mission systems' (from what I figured, this would be something independently checked as, if met, it could lead to 'full rate production', 'block buy' etc.) after Trump and his no-nonsense team take over

Harrier ofc less modern, capble but good boy don't forget British ( Sea Harrier has a radar not at this time Harrier GR Mk 3 ) during Falklands War Sea Harrier 21 vs 0 ... no losses and 28 % of Argentinians aicrafts destroyed almost also good than Exocet i left

But Argentinians drivers braves ! about 50% losses mainly around San Carlos Bay ... !

NB : Normaly British never use in combats the vector thrust.
And only war ( not operations ... ) with warships armed with SAM vs aircrafts unique.

The F-35: We Need the Numbers and We Need Them Now
I was director of Air Force budget when F-22 aircraft production was cancelled. The rationale was, it is better to “leap” to the F-35 because it was cheaper and could be purchased in higher quantities. That decision made the F-35 the single most important defense program in the nation. That decision declared the F-35 would be crucial to meeting U.S. objectives in the National Security Strategy.

At the time, it was said the Air Force must have the F-35 in sufficient numbers to enable the world’s greatest Air Force to engage around the world, shaping the security environment and maintaining peace and stability. As an expeditionary aircraft, the F-35 would provide the unique capability to deploy around the globe on very short notice. Additionally, there was an emphasis on having sufficient numbers to allow a rotational base for peacetime training, and if necessary, fight and win a conflict.

During Thanksgiving dinner, my siblings asked me why the U.S. should purchase this new fifth generation aircraft at the numbers requested. They reasoned, “why not use the aircraft we already have? Wouldn’t that be cheaper?” My inquisitive siblings were shocked with my answer. They did not realize that today, the Air Force has a “geriatric” fighter aircraft fleet. The aircraft are old, tired and no longer hold an unquestioned advantage over potential adversaries. They were also surprised when I told them many Air Force aircraft would qualify for an antique license plate in most states. My siblings perked up when I explained the F-35 helps the U.S. to maintain a clear technology gap over potential adversaries and they really got excited when I explained that the best pilots flying the most technologically advanced aircraft may actually prevent a war by providing a clear and unambiguous deterrent.

The other point we discussed was the F-35 would be employed as a lethal package, including the F-22 and the new B-21. This combination, that no adversary in their right mind would want to oppose, introduces new capabilities as a sensor-shooter enabling a shift to new 21st century warfare like the combat cloud. Taken together, this package can act as the centerpiece of an ISR/strike/maneuver complex achieving conventional deterrence and, when necessary, provide overwhelming effects to defeat any adversary.

A recent article written by retired Lt. Gen. Dave Deptula, who planned the Desert Storm air campaign and orchestrated air operations over Iraq and Afghanistan, said, “The requirement for accelerated investment in the F-35 is alarmingly clear. No military operation can successfully occur without control of the air. Anyone doubting this conclusion should review pictures from the ‘highway of death,’ where Saddam Hussein’s retreating forces were annihilated from above as they fled Kuwait in 1991.”

We need these aircraft now and in sufficient numbers to do the job. The fact is, our adversaries are rapidly closing the technology gap we have enjoyed over the past few decades, not only putting our national interests at risk, but also threatening the lives of our airmen, sailors, soldiers, and Marines in a manner not seen since the early parts of the Korean War.

As president of the Air Force Association, I’m deeply concerned. After 26 years of constant conflict, the Air Force is now operating the oldest aircraft fleet in its history. The Air Force cannot maintain its current dominance of air, space, and cyberspace while operating with outdated technologies and systems that are increasing in cost to operate, while their capability relative to modern aircraft is declining.

There is a viable solution: build a sufficient amount of F-35s to offset this challenge and at an economical rate to rapidly replace our aged-out F-15s, F-16s and A-10s. We cannot accept the risk that comes with the current budget plan that has slashed fifth generation aircraft production. With the current anemic rates of production, we give up the technological advantage the F-35 brings us with insufficient numbers of aircraft to meet our security challenges. There is no mulligan here. There will be no second chances.

Once we cancelled production of the F-22, the F-35 became the only game in town. However, we now find the F-35 being the target of budgetary gimmicks from slowing down the production rate or buying fewer aircraft with a promise to increase production later. At this rate, we will retire early production F-35s as we accept later production aircraft in the future. This is no way to run national defense of the greatest country on earth. This is the only U.S. fifth generation stealth aircraft in production. The Chinese and Russians, combined, have multiple fifth generation aircraft in production with more on the drawing board. The F-35 program’s importance is unparalleled by anything else in the defense industry. Our enemies are not waiting.

All U.S. forces rely on air dominance to fulfill their missions and win our wars. Without enough fifth-generation fighters to control the skies in future battlespace, America’s sons and daughters could pay with their lives. We must keep faith with them. The F-35 is our best solution.
not even a scent of any F-35 issue; source:

Ypu very may turn out to be right but my question and indeed a lot of other peoples question is what happens when all the fancy electronics fail or air defenses catch up to them can it out fight out turn or out gun any thing else in the sky remember the F still stands for fighter and if it cannot do the said above things then it should be cancelled or reclassed as a fighter bomber or some thing like that of course I like the history part remember the F 105 was classed as a fighter along with the F111 and F4 all great fighter bombers but in a dogfight most pilots would rather be in a different bird the 4 really only succeeded because of the pilots skill and the tactics employed would the 35 would not be in for a rough time

If I were to choose a fighter aircraft to go out and win today, I would have to choose the LockMart F-35A, second choice would be the C, and third choice would be the B.... to read the above article, really places the "imperative" on the F-35 purchase.

While I understand your doubt, you have been taken in by self proclaimed experts who have magnified each engineering challenge that the F-35 has experienced, and proclaimed each one to be "disqualifying" to the mission. Nothing could be further from the truth, the F-35A has been flown without the "safeties" inherent in the Fly by Wire to 9.9Gs. That's takes an incredible amount of inherent lift and thrust to achieve. It has also been flown to an angle of attack of 73 degrees initially and recovered without incident, and later to 105 degrees angle of attack.

That is incredible aerodynamic performance likely only achieved by aircraft equipped with OVT, or thrust vectoring, while the Flanker will likely do these same things?? the Eurofighter, Rafale, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-18 E-F and I could go on and on, will not.

Lets be honest, PAK-FA, SU-35, and possibly the J-20 may well exhibit this same "incredible" level of aerodynamic performance, they are not on the same plane when it comes to weapons suites, the F-35 is an incredible war fighting machine, with situational awareness that will boggle your mind, as you sit on the ramp and fire it up, taxi out, and take-off, you will know who and where the "bad guys" are, and where they have been, and likely where they are headed.

This airplane is "smarter" than anything else, that anyone else is hoping to field in the near and distant future, in spite of all the kool little add copy that you may read?? Russian or Chinese, the F-35 is the Bird with the Bite! If you are flying "anything" other than an F-22, you'd be better off to stay in bed, roll over and "go back to sleep"!

We really don't know how well the Chinese Flanker or J-20 fly, because we haven't seen them pushed. But the F-35 will meet and defeat "ANY" other aircraft on the planet BVR and WVR, with the likely exception of the F-22.
