Good graphic Mr Brumby but justly F-35 RCS in this blog is of 0,0013 one decimal less 0,01 for the back generally valid for all stealth aircraft, US really better mainly for RAM because he build Stealth aircrafts since 40 years about, F-117 and are very experienced.

@ Air Force Brat you are interested by some data on S-300, for begin about 5 variants and each use up to 4 differents missile, TEL, radars also profusely, really a very big family :)

If you're going against a foe that still has med-long range SAM systems up and running, you're not going to focus on providing CAS anyway. There will be a (protracted) air campaign against the opposing air defense network first. Only once that is truely degraded will the focus shift from "offensive counter air" via "air interdiction" to "CAS". Of course those phases will overlap, depending on the nature of the conflict.
If some hostile AD capability remains with the onset of the ground action, there will be Growlers / more F-35 in the air standing by in a CAP to do SEAD / DEAD as required. And they'll be using HARM and possibly JSOW and what not.

that is of correct Master Scratch, and thank you for putting my thoughts into words, you are a credit to your people, and a tremendous asset and friend here on SDF, great post.

My source on the RSC profile of the F-35 is based on the work done by Airpower Australia. Specifically in article titled "Sukhoi strikes the Lightning F-35 JSF" describes the reading as :
Front - 0.01 m2
Side - 0.1 m2
Top and bottom - 0.3 m2
Rear - 0.5 m2

I know these numbers are subjective but I am curious on your source of 0.0013. That type of profile is more of the F-22A than a F-35 from what I understand.

If SDB II fails, then the fall back option is MBDA's SPEAR Capability 3. It has more range and is a bit smaller, can fit inside the B's bays.

The program has not been without issues, however. When development work began in 2010, the U.K. had settled on the F-35C conventional carrier-borne variant with a larger weapons bay. But the 2012 decision to revert back to the F-35B set the Spear 3 program back nine months. Engineers had to reduce the length of the weapon by 20 cm (8 in.) so it would fit the F-35B's smaller bay. “Repackaging the weapon into a smaller airframe has been one of the most challenging aspects of the program,” Wester says.

This is a better option than messing with the size of the weapons bays. The Marines can have the SPEAR 3 half a decade early.

you shouldn't use anything from Carlo Kopp. He is constantly over-hyping the China/Russian threat to make his case that Australia need F-22 rather than F-35. Of course, there is no indication that US will ever sell F-22.

I noticed this is a common comment from a number of posters in different forums regarding this point - about his particular bias. Introspectively, don't we all practiced it in some shape or form? The piece though that I have yet to see is very specific criticism of his technical work. He takes a very methodical approach which I find useful as background information and as knowledge base. I think we do need to differentiate between his personal crusade over the F-22 and whether he has inadvertently or purposely in the process distorted technical data. Do you know of any specific areas of his technical work that are questionable? I am not a technical person by training and so I cannot make critical judgement but can only take his work at face value. I believe he is consulted by the Australian government and do make expert presentation at technical hearings and so presumably he has professional standing with the establishment.

Well Pierre Sprey, Bill Sweetman, and Carlo Kopp are generally F-35 nay sayers, on Defense Talk, the mods refer to them as the "clown club", while some of their information is no doubt usefull, the F-35 is moving forward and the F-22 is out of production and line disassembled sadly?? Like others their stock in trade are media "shock and awe???" although they love to overblow and hype problems, they are still living on their "laurels", but to be sure TP is on the money here.

While I was not impressed initially with the F-35, in hindsight, I should have had more faith in LockMart as they have consistently come up with winners. The F-35 continues to rack up sales, and the price continues to drop, and while the F-22 was and will continue to be the worlds most capable A2A platform, it is very unlikely to be revived sadly
