Re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

In the case of the F-35C, reducing the skill level in landing was part of the program.

I wouldn't say reducing the pilots skill level, but actually the aircraft is reducing the pilots "workload", with the flaps being "coupled to the glideslope by the autopilot/FCS in order to maintain glidepath, the pilot is able to give his attention to actually flying the airplane in the pattern and down the approach, the HMS will also make that a MO-BETTA deal.... anyone thinking that this would somehow reduce the skill level has likely never contemplated the physics of hitting a moving target, any time of day or night, in any weather..... that my friend is a "humbling endeavor"!

Landing is almost an art and you can see all the skill of the naval aviation pilot.
Great but also dangerous job !

Yeah, go ahead Forbin, hum that Kenny Loggins tune as you imagine your-self attempting to line up behind the boat, throttles up, flaps, gear, and speed brake engaged, jockeying the throttles and pitch, maintaining wings level, and runway centerline with the rudder and aileron's as the boat gets closer and closer things look less and less "kosher", sweat all over the place, you "KNOW" you're gonna need a shower, IF you live through this???? Highway to the Danger Zone!

A naval aviators are only as good as there last landing. and Lading on a carrier is no easy task. so any thing that makes it easier is a good thing. but It should be noted that the touch down by the F35C on the Nimitz was a no.3 Wire. on a carrier deck of the US Navy there are 4 wires. First wire is the best, you snag wire one the guys treat you as a god for a day, you snag Wire 2 it's good, Wire 3 is okay Wire 4 is a near miss a millionth of a second from a wave off. so any tech advantage that gives the Aviator the chance to Snag the first two wires more often is a good technology.

actually T, you are looking to engage the 3 wire,,,, it may seem counter-intuitive, but that's the way it is on election night Nov 4, 2014.... I believe the Ford class will just have 3 wires??? now wheres the old man?

Awesome pictures Astute, thanks for posting,,,, missing our old Pappy, wish you were here big daddy?

I think the 3 wire is actually the target (aimpoint for the glideslope set by the landing light). Not positive but I believe the 3 wire is the preferred choice.

Re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

Second day i guess, telemetry problem for catapult seems the first.

F-35C get a tailhook much more forward as F-18 or oldest naval fighters also, and arresting gear problem this was caused by this, why have changed, impossible found another location rearmost ?
