France, Germany and Italy launch the 2020 European MALE UAV

France, Germany and Italy have signed a Declaration of Intent (DoI) for the definition study of a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Medium Altitude Long Endurance European (Medium Altitude Long Endurance or MALE). The three countries signed the document sets up a definition study two years to develop a European capability in the area of unmanned aircraft systems for surveillance missions, reconnaissance and intelligence (ISR) yesterday.

The definition phase of the call MALE 2020 will serve to unite the customer requirements and reduce technical and financial risks of the program. If everything progresses as expected, following this period, it was decided to develop and acquire this system by the three countries.

Major European countries have for years claiming a European capability in areas how are you own instead of buying Israeli or American systems origin to consider this as a strategic capability. This sovereign solution would both surveillance and reconnaissance missions of a military nature to civil security applications. The decision has been welcomed by the three companies that participate in this program: Airbus Defence and Space by Germany, Dassault Aviation by France and

from Italy. These companies agreed in May last year to make a proposal for the definition of 24 months after which there will be the stage of development and ultimately the delivery, which would begin in 2020 .

Spain, for the moment, apart

In March the Spanish Ministry of Defence presented the Director of RPAs Plan which presented its intentions in this area, act in which he predicted that Spain would stay out, at least initially, of this program. This week it was announced the joint development of a Class III RPAS by Germany, France and Italy, which have already positioned the Airbus Defence and Space company, Dassault Aviation and

representing each of these countries and now is formally launched. It is planned that an agreement between the three countries in the Paris Air Show to be held in June is signed. The Spanish Ministry of Defense is studying the adoption of an interim or transitional solution to meet your needs of a MALE or RPAS Class III . This would cover the current shortcomings and would define the requirements for Spanish participation in a European program that does not materialize before 2025. The European program should be

The Ministry of Spanish defense office there is a program for strategic MALE and HALE has already launched the RFI (Request For Information) and a feasibility study. Thanks, I'll have to check with the Belgian Navy PAO because their release clearly indicated all (including NFH) NH90 at Beauchevain.

Other things Doorman FFG get now a hangar modernised for host NH-90 NFH ofc more large as Alouette III.
Same for NL Doorman.

The Dutch together with the Belgians decided to upgrade their frigates by rebuilding both hangar and helicopter deck to accommodate the NH-90 helicopter

F-22 Raptors Will Be Deploying To Europe To Send A Strong Message To Russia

After teasing the possibility of Raptors deploying to Europe months ago, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James has confirmed to reporters that Raptor is indeed going to be sent to Europe as part of an ongoing initiative to reassure NATO allies of America’s commitment to their defense.

Secretary James made it clear that the move to send the F-22 to Russia’s front doorstep is part of Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s “strong and balanced” approach to reminding Russia of the consequences of extra-border ambitions:

“Rotational forces and training exercises help us maintain our strong and balanced approach, and we will certainly be continuing those in the future… For the Air Force, an F-22 deployment is certainly on the strong side of the coin.”

Exactly what F-22 unit will be sent to Europe and where they would be based remains unclear, although General. Mark Welsh, the U.S. Air Force’s Chief of Staff noted:

“We’ll get the F-22 into facilities that we would potentially use in a conflict in Europe… This is a natural evolution of our bringing our best air-to-air capability in to train with partners… We have an aircraft with pretty advanced capabilities, and we need, and they would like, for us to be able to interoperate in multiple type scenarios… And being able to train side by side with them and do that kind of training is really, really important for us. And that’s what this is for.”

The Raptor’s inaugural long-term deployment to Europe (it has had a near constant presence in the Middle East) will most likely follow along the lines of what the Florida and Oregon Air National Guard have executed in their F-15C/Ds since Spring. As part of the ongoing Operation Atlantic Resolve, the Eagles hopped East from one key NATO base to another, training with local units along the way, before ending up at a temporary Eastern European air defense post.

Sending a detachment of Raptors to Europe also points to the possibility that things are not necessarily improving when it comes to Russian-NATO relations. If anything else, they are getting worse as forward deploying the world’s only truly operational 5th generation fighter to Eastern Europe is a card best held until needed.

Then again, the size of America’s air superiority fighter fleet has shrunk so much over the last 25 years that the Eagle community, made up of about 192 aircraft in total (about 25 percent of which are being used for training and development), may not be able to sustain these types of deployments alone while also meeting their homeland defense, regional deterrent and their many training goals. Additionally, both aircraft, the super complex F-22 and the aging F-15C, require large amounts of maintenance to keep them airworthy at any given time. As such, calling the F-22 to deploy to Europe may be an acknowledgement of an inevitable logistical reality as much as a strategic play.

Russia and Belarus jointly develop a new system of short-range anti-aircraft missiles with high mobility

ELMTtFa.jpg

(Defensa.com) Both governments have initiated a joint project to acquire a short-range air defense system with which to replace the Strela-10M veterans who use their land armies. This was confirmed in a recent interview by the official Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Deputy Defense Minister of Belarus Major General Igor Lotenkov. Remember that the first versions of the 9K35 Strela-10M system, designed in the early seventies of the last century, entered service within the Army of the former USSR in 1976, being a blockbuster, becoming service around 25 nations.

The 9K35 is a tracked armored vehicle mainly or wheels, riding between two and four containers of anti-aircraft missile launchers in 9M37 model origin and then of successive improved this guided missile developments. In any case the system, which NATO coding known as SA-13 Gopher, is gradually becoming obsolete. The plans of both countries to develop a substitute Strela-10M were announced last May, and possibly be based on the new Russian system Sosna, consisting of a launcher system, also mounted on a vehicle, armed with 12 anti-aircraft missiles Sosná- R, to provide a permanent capacity of short-range antiaircraft self-defense to the armored and mechanized infantry units.

Moreover, as manifested by General Lotenkov to RIA Novosti, Belarus expects the holding Russian Helicopters will deliver the first six utility helicopters, which can be armed Mi-8MTV-5 commissioned before the end of 2016 . Remember that last June, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus made a request to that Russian holding will give itself to a dozen devices of this modern version of the legendary Mil Mi-8 helicopter, which first entered service units 1967, and that there have been more than 12,000 units. Currently the first part of that batch of Mi-8MTV-5, also referred to internationally as Mi-17V-5, commissioned by Minsk, is being built at the Kazan Helicopter Plant (Russia).

Italy has completed its share of testing of the pan-European Neuron unmanned combat air vehicle, which saw it carry out 12 sorties from Decimomannu air base in Sardinia.

Announced by Italian industry lead Alenia

on 25 August, the time in Sardinia allowed for flight testing of the UCAV’s stealth characteristics at different altitudes and with different flight profiles, having met “all established goals”.

“The 12 highly sensitive sorties have allowed [us] to verify the characteristics of Neuron’s combat capability, its low radar-cross section and low infrared signature, during missions flown at different altitudes and flight profiles and against both ground-based and air radar ‘threats’, using in this latter case, a

,” Alenia says.

“During the deployment in Italy, the Neuron has confirmed its already ascertained excellent performance and high operational reliability.”

The UCAV demonstrator will now move to Sweden, where Saab will be the industrial lead during the testing at Vidsel air base, where low observability trials will take place, as well as weapon delivery testing from the aircraft’s weapons bay.

Prior to its stint in Italy, Neuron conducted flight testing in France, which included 100 test flights carried out by

. The first flight that was carried out in France was in December 2012.

During the UCAV’s time in France, which ended in March 2015, the sensor, data link and stealth characteristics of the demonstrator were tested, and a first phase of evaluations involved opening Neuron’s flight envelope – including opening the weapons bay door – as well as electro-optical sensor and data link performance validation.

During a second phase, “most flights were dedicated to infrared and electromagnetic signature/detection confrontations against operational systems”,

said in March, adding that all “produced all the expected results”.

The six-nation Neuron development is led by Dassault Aviation, partnered by

Italian-Navy-Ship-Aids-Compatriot-Bulker.jpg

World Maritime News said:
An Italian-flagged merchant vessel MV Roberto Rizzo received much needed help from an Italian navy ship ITS Libeccio after it became adrift 55 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, on Thursday, 18 June.

MV Roberto Rizzo had been en route to China when it issued a distress call, after developing serious engine problems.

Its close proximity to the coast made it vulnerable to potential pirate attack, the statement from the EURNAVFOR said.

As ITS Libeccio’s helicopter hovered overhead while Italian Navy engineers carried out repairs on the stricken engine.

”I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the crew of ITS Libeccio for their timely assistance,’‘ the master of MV Roberto Rizzo, Nicolae Anthofie, said.

MV Roberto Rizzo is a 2009-built, 176,189 dwt Capesize bulk carrier operated by the Napoli-based Rizzo-Bottiglieri-De Carlini.

So, you are off the coast of Somalia and your engine fails and you are adrift.

Bad place to be adrift if you are a large container/cargo/tanker these days.

Luckily for them, their own Navy's Maestral class frigate, ITS Lebeccio, F572, was near enough to render them aid.

I bet they were glad to see them coming.
