European Military News, Reports, Data, etc.

I posted the broomstick story on the previous page. other issues included lacking Side arms HK P8 and Failing Night vision gear.

oh, yes, they start with https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/european-military-news-views.t4395/page-33#post-327841
sorry TE ... hope you believe I'm not that arrogant :) but I try to follow just Naval Affairs and high-tech airplanes ... back to the story: what's beyond my comprehension is why did they use that "painted broomstick" I mean were the soldiers ordered, by a Sergeant?, to paint it so that their Squad "gets the machine-gun" this way?? or what

In this case the issue most specifically related to the mounted Machine guns on there Boxer APCs. As I said there Using MG3.
now germany is in transition moving from the MG3 to the HK121 both are 7.62mm MG's but not compatible with each other. It seems likely the the logistics system fouled up and the unit intended for the exercises was shorted MG's and Pistols. Now post script is that the German command should be re evaluating there contracts and logistics train for those including buying more pistols, barrels and MG's but because Command wanted the exercise on schedule they improvised a solution that was fine for the exercise but would have cost lives on a real battle field.
Also deeply troubling is the reported failure rate of the LUCIE night vision gear. Pistols are fall back weapons not a big issue, but MG's on Vehicles and Night vision are mission critical.

I like Navy most in Swedish Armed Forces. Then Air Force.

I think Air Force or Army is strongest in Swedes supporters.

I think 35 new coast guards boats and 1000 seeman with 60 patrull boats and 5 Stridsbat 90E. Plus 5 or 6 submarines in future plannes. And 4 missile boats and 5 Visby Corvettes and 4 old boats. Near whole warrior ships in Sweden. 3000 man after 2019 to. 2000+1000 in Navy.

Many warrior boats finished around 2025 if I knows right now?

Like in Sweden and Russia all between 2020-2025. Swedes ministry wills only 42st Leopard 2A5 after modernization. Beginning in season 2016-17. Finished to 2020s.

Plus russians do Army reserve force to younger warriors plus Equimpment new. In 3-5 year in Russia finished jobs.

There's four Type 212 in active service in the german navy right now. Two more have already been launched. One is supposed to be comissioned next month, the final one late in the year. I'm currently not 100% sure of the actual status right now of the 5th boat.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say with the fighter post. There's around 60 Gripen C/D in service right now, and 60 Gripen E ordered for the future. I can't see the swedish AF do anything else then continue buying their home produced proven and succesfull jets. Especially now that production / funding seems secured with the Brazilians choosing the type as well.

Everyone's cutting tank # unfortunately, and maybe unwisely. But the Stridsvagn 122 is at least a really good development of the Leo 2A5.

On the boat side, I'm not so firm by far. There's 3 Gotlands and two older subs. I'm not aware of any ongoing plans to replace subs right now. But that whole "unknown hostile submarine" issue a few month ago off the swedish cost might give reason enough to have 5-6 Gotland type subs in the future. Plus maybe a Visby type ASW corvette?

Btw, I know that "edit" function is only available for a few minutes to newcomers, and I kind of dislike that, but combining your thoughts instead of making multiple posts just a few minutes apart makes it easier to comprehend.

Well, I believe the 5th, S185/U35 was launched in November 2011 and is scheduled to be commissioned next month, as you say. The 6th, S186/U36 was launched in February 2013 and is scheduled to be commissioned in the 4th quarter of 2015 I believe.

GREAT subs those.

2-3 of Gotland will be renovated plus HMS Södermanland, which according to wikipedia came into service in 2007 to renovate plus two new submarine at same time. Between 2021-2024 in service. Six or five submarine in service. How goes down after ten year to 3 submarine another ten year.

Seven Visby class of Corvettes or five just like today in futures.

GREAT subs those.

Rather quietly, for the past few years, HDW has been developing the Type 216 concept. That is an upscaled 212/214, with all the good tech from the first, but being considerably larger a proper ocean going SSK.

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

HDW gives the follosing description:

  • Schiff- und Uboot Abwehr (ship-, u-boat defense)
  • Aufklärung, Überwachung und Zielerfassung (ISTAR)
  • Angriff von Landzielen (attack of land targets)
  • Unterstützung bei Operationen von Sondereinsatzkräften (support SOF)
  • Einsatz von unbemannten Fahrzeugen (unmanned vehicles, UUV?)
  • Minenausbringung und Minenaufklärung (mine-laying, mine-recce)

Länge ü.a. (length): ~ 90 m
Durchmesser (diameter): ~ 8 m
Verdrängung (displacement): ~ 4000 t
Torpedorohre (tubes): 6
Besatzung (crew): 34 + 29

With the Type 218 SG Singapore already ordered two derivatives of that concept for around 2020.

Such an ocean going SSK, in my dreams with 4 (canted) VLS tubes to empoy a Kongsberg NSM type weapon, would be awesome. I'm still holding out a little hope for the australian thing.
