Why would that be odd? Its been quite common evolution to up the calibre of next-generation rifles in response to the advancement of cheap body armour. The 5,56x45 will be a "självskyddsvapen" (self-defence weapon) while the 7,62x51 will be an Automatkarbin (automatic carbine).

Most larger and even smaller NATO countries bought recently or are buying new 5,56x45 rifles for their frontline soldiers. Seems like US Army and Sweden are only exceptions and even those two use different calibers.

The ultimate goal is NATO members all end up using American standards so America can make huge profit, most EU Armies today cannot operate like they used too, now a days they need America to do any meaningful operations abroad. A good example is the recent and slow decline of the UK Armed Forces, the US Army General even said they're below a 2nd tier fight force and much of the people's moral in the UK don't seem like they would take up arms for it. Sweden is a recent addition so they've been doing their own thing for quite some time before joining the NATO hense why they have such unique equipment compared to the rest of NATO members, but also appropriate for their geography and fighting style.

Finally, great news!
Surely a great reinforcement to the NATO's eastern flank and both countries accession (Sweden soon) solves a lot of problems and Baltic became a NATO pond - many leaders in the West dreamed about it and now it's reality. This greatly improves the situation of the three small Baltic states as well.

It's also important to remember the people without whom it couldn't be accomplished - like Vladmir Vladimirovich as he's the main architect of the recent NATO accessions!
