Of course Dassault and Paris don’t want that Germany getting F-35, it would take away some leverage for pushing for more French workshares. If FCAS fails Germany would still have modern 5th gen planes vs the latest tranche of a plane from the 70s.

Dassault needs to accept the workshare agreement.

I suspected that if Germany bought F-35s it might kill FCAS as a joint project and I was probably correct.
For the Germans FCAS will replace the Eurofighter and the F-35 the Tornado.
But the French want a multi-role aircraft which will do every single role.

I think the whole German procurement strategy is idiotic. I would have upgraded the Eurofighter and integrated B-61 in it long ago. The Eurofighter has good enough performance to replace the Tornado. The Russians still do not have that many stealth aircraft and the Poles are the ones in the front line anyway.

Germany needs a Tornado replacement in this decade anyway and already has marked a large budget for it. Paris just wants the leverage that none of the FCAS nations are operating 5th gen planes. But once Germany is buying a mixed fleet of F-35 and additional Eurofighters then Spain will look into getting F-35B for its carrier making France the only FCAS nation without a 5th gen plane. Of course that’s going against French interest of turning ‘European sovereignty’ into a French monopoly.
