End of RF-4

It is official, the last NATO tactical reconnaissance unit on RF-4, the 348 MTA of the 110th Combat Wing of the Greek Air Force, will withdraw its RF-4E after 39 years of continuous activity on this model. The withdrawal ceremony is scheduled to take place on 5 May in Larissa AB, with a flight demonstration of the patrols "Zeus" and "Daedalus".

Greece received its first eight RF-4Es in 1978-79 with the Peace Icarus II contract (SerNo 70357, 70358 and 71761 to 71766). In 1993, 20 RF-4E ex-Luftwaffe reinforced this small reconnaissance force reduced to five by attrition, allowing the permanent removal of the RF-84F still in service. Seven other aircraft were delivered for parts.

There will remain some thirty F-4Es modernized in the early 2000s under the Peace Icarus 2000 program and aligned by the 338 and 339 MABs of the 117th CW of Andravida AB. They should fly a few more years.

Italian G550 CAEW enters service

A first Italian Air Force G550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) aircraft has been taken on by 71° Gruppo of 14° Stormo based at Pratica di Mare, near Rome. The aircraft has received the military serial MM62293 and the unit code ‘14-11’.

The initial G550 CAEW was delivered to the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force) on December 19, in the course of a ceremony that was held at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Israel. The ceremony was attended by the Italian ambassador to Israel, senior officials from the Italian Ministry of Defence’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and representatives from the Italian Air Force.

A second aircraft is expected to be delivered to the Aeronautica Militare during 2017.

The acquisition is part of a military and industrial offset agreement that was signed between Italy and Israel in 2012. The deal followed the Israeli Ministry of Defense’s decision to purchase 30 examples of the Italian-produced M-346 advanced jet trainer, to replace the A-4 Skyhawk (Ahit) in the advanced training role.

Denmark selects CAESAR

Nexter Systems, a 155 mm self-propelled cannon, has a second success in exports in the space of a month. After an order of 18 additional systems by Indonesia, it is the turn of Denmark to announce the purchase of 15 CAESAR to replace the 32 M109A3 Paladin in service since 1965. "It is a historic day for the army . Our firepower is back, "Major General Hans Christian Mathiesen, Chief of Staff of the Danish Land Army, said yesterday.

Once in service with the 1st Danish Army Artillery Battalion, these 15 CAESARs will represent the bulk of the country's strike force, with Denmark having decided in 2008 to divest itself of its 12 launcher systems, Multiple rocket M270A1. This contract, the amount of which remains unknown, also includes an option for the delivery of six additional systems.

It is actually a double victory for the French system integrator, who realizes in passing the first sale for export of the new version "high intensity" CAESAR unveiled in September 2015 during the trade show DSEI.

The variant selected by Denmark is based on a 8 × 8 Tatra T-815 chassis allowing a higher load. A mass take, in particular justified by an almost doubled ammunition carrying capacity (30 shells instead of 18 on the 6 × 6 version) and better protection of the crew, thanks to an armored cabin of level 2A or 2B. The system can also be equipped with a 12.7 mm remotely operated turret, an anti-IED system and additional fuel reserves. With a mass of 30 tons, this variant is air-transportable by A400M.

In addition to Nexter and CAESAR, the final phase of this competition, launched in November 2015, saw Elbit Systems and ATMOS compete with the Korean Hanwa Techwin with the K9 Thunder

Germany plans to buy six Lockheed C-130J aircraft for 900 million euros

The German government plans to buy six Lockheed Martin C-130J military transport planes for around 900 million euros ($966 million) starting in 2019 under a joint operating agreement with France, German government documents show.

Germany and France first began working on the deal in October and announced broad outlines of their plans in February at a meeting of the NATO alliance, part of a broader push to increase European defense cooperation.

The German finance and defense ministries provided first concrete details about the cost of the aircraft -- and 110 million euros in additional costs for infrastructure and training simulators -- in documents sent to lawmakers, who must approve the funding for the planned German-French agreement.

The German finance ministry said Berlin would formally request procurement of the airplanes in 2019, according to the documents seen by Reuters.

France has already ordered four aircraft and plans to buy two more for the fleet, which is to be based in Evreux, France and operated jointly by both countries, the documents showed.

France would match Germany's spending of 110 million euros for infrastructure improvements at the air base and to buy simulators for joint training, they said.

The joint fleet is to be ready for use by 2021.

The German defense ministry told lawmakers that the simulators for the C-130J were built by Canadian firm CAE Inc, and official discussions with Canadian authorities about the procurement were planned in 2017.

The German air force had initially hoped to buy up to 12 C-130J military transports itself for the joint fleet so it could operate some in France, and set up a second base in Germany, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The defense ministry settled on buying six aircraft, citing financial constraints, but several sources said the issue could be revisited in coming years.

"The need was identified and it hasn't changed," said one of the sources.

Germany says it need the C-130J transports to augment a planned fleet of 53 Airbus A400M transports and fill a capability gap that will come up starting in 2021 when Germany retires its fleet of smaller C-160 Transall transports, which can land at a broader array of airports and runways.

Spain Issues Multiple Contracts to Upgrade Transport Fleet, Fighters
11-Jun-2008 14:20 EDT

AIR_AV-8B_Spain_lg.jpg

EAV-8B Matador

In December 2006, Spain’s Minister’s Council has authorized a number of aircraft contracts in addition to their Eurocopter-related plans, creating more maritime patrol aircraft, expanding the transport fleet slightly, modernizing its EAV-8B Harriers/Matadors, and buying engines and spares for its CH-47 heavy-lift helicopter fleet. The total value of these contracts is over EUR 130 million.
In June 2008, the Harrier modernization contract was announced by EADS. DID offers details below regarding the upgrade’s elements, scope, and final cost.

DID thanks subscriber Pedro Lucio for bringing these items to our attention, and assisting with translations.

4 Harriers to Receive Upgrades

AV-8B “day attack”

The Ministers’ Council approved the modernization of 4 EAV-8B Matador aircraft to full Harrier II Plus configuration. The contract is worth EUR 10 million (currently about $13 million), with a funding distributed over 4 years from 2006-2009. The Spanish Navy operates a total of 17 EAV-8B aircraft.
On June 11/08, EADS announced a EUR 11.5 million/ $17.8 million contract to upgrade 4 of the Navy’s AV-8B “day attack” Harriers. While many of Spain’s “Matador” aircraft are Harrier II+ standard, these aircraft are not. This upgrade will be performed by EADS in Spain, and allows the Spanish Navy to homogenize most of their fleet of Harrier aircraft to a common engine, navigation, operational software and missions planning system configuration that can conduct operations at night.

The modernization will involve new Rolls Royce Pegasus 408A engines, Night Vision Goggle (NVG)-compatible cockpit controls and displays, external NVG lighting, new computers, a wide-field-of-view Head-Up Display, the installation of a new AN/ARC-210 Havequick communications system, an Automatic Target Handoff System (ATHS) and an advanced Global Positioning System (GPS), a new MINITACAN navigation system, a Digital Video Mapping System, and upgraded armament and electronic warfare capabilities.

EADS Military Air Systems is also responsible for the Third Maintenance Level of the fixed-wing aircraft of the Spanish Navy, including comprehensive maintenance, overhaul and repair (MRO) activities such technical support, maintenance revision programs and structural repairs. This is being carried out within a EUR 7 million umbrella contract valid until 2009. Boeing is also contracted to support Spain’s carrier fleet, as one of the parties to a 5-year support contract called HISS that began in June 2007.

CN-235/295 Family Contracts

AIR_CN-235MP_Persuader_lg.jpg

CN-235MP Persuader

Spain’s Ministers’ Council has authorized a contract is authorized for the transformation of 6 C-235 transports currently serving with the Ejercito del Aire’s Ala 35 based at Madrid-Getalfe to CN-235MP maritime surveillance /SAR versions. The contract would be worth EUR 49 million (currently about $64.5 million), and will be performed by manufacturer EADS-CASA.

These CN-235MPs will replace 3 Fokker-27 Maritime aircraft currently in service.

The Ministers’ Council also authorized a EUR 21 million (currently about $27.5 million) contract to acquire one C-295M military transport. The C-295 is a stretched version of the C-235. “This aircraft has the possibility of realizing logistic, tactical transport and medical transport, and, with secondary character, operations of maritime surveillance and of support to operations of search and rescue.”

The contract will be signed with manufacturer EADS-CASA.

Chinook Helicopter Upgrades & Spares

chinook9.jpg

An Agreement was adopted approving the acquisition of engines, components and accessories for Spain’s HT-17/CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The contracts will be worth EUR 53 million (currently about $70 million), the funding being distributed over 4 years from 2006-2009.

According to Scramble, Spain’s CH-47Ds are assigned to Army aviation’s BHELTRA V, flying out of Colmenar Viejo north of Madrid.
That's nice...but an upgraded Harrier can only do so much...and only for four?

Spain needs to bite the bullet and get a contract in for F-35Bs for their naval air to replace the HArriers.

Sooner or later they will.

Especially when they see the Bravo on the Italian carriers.
