I wouldn't call the differences between say... the Tiger tank and the Sherman tank a mere edge. Nor I call the differences between the Fokker wolf in the Buffalo Brewster a mere edge, to say nothing of the Buffalo Brewster versus the Zero Fighter. Most of the early Curtis Hawk aircraft could not compete with axis designs either. By any static analysis the United States was at least 10 years behind but made up the difference in a tiny fraction of that time.

LOL. By the beginning of the war, the US had already taken over the UK in control of the seas. America was a miraculously industrialized nation that was realizing the dream of an automobile for every family! Trying to pretend that the US was "10 years" behind the Axis (especially the Japanese) is a delusion belief typical of today's Pentagon propaganda.

Whether you're comparing official numbers against official numbers or including expenditures that tend to elude official accounting, the United States still tends to get more bang for its buck for every military dollar spent. In any case the United States is not the only government out there that grossly understates its actual military expenditures via accounting gimmicks (they all do every single one) and indeed this is a feature of bureaucracy in general, no matter what you're spending money on... Especially in the public sector.

LOL. The US spends nearly 10% of its GDP on the military. Most of its recent projects have flunked (see LCS). The economy is tanking. The dollar is about to collapse. And you're holding on to some delusion belief that the US military is underfunded. Let's all hold our belly for a good laugh here.

I wonder how long it'll take before China replaces the USSR in this role?

LOL. The last time I checked, the Chinese economy is expected to overtake the US real GDP by 2015.

The patent and copyright system of the United States originated by Thomas Jefferson has never been fully replicated nor improved on by any other nation.

Oh my God... patent system invented by the US? Who taught you this garbage?

You talked about freedom and government checks and balances. The US holds no advantage in this regard at all over China or Russia.

I was talking about the relative technological difference of military weapons systems not the economy as a whole. An automobile in every household will have no bearing upon military aviation or comparisons between different types of main battle tanks. How you interpreted my statements in this way is a will puzzling given that this is a military forum.

The military always seems over-funded, until of course its services are needed. This will most often comes a reality check to people such as yourself. Nevertheless putting the military budget on "a strict high fiber diet" colloquially speaking can be a healthy thing, given how he well the United States plays catch-up in military affairs historically. Let any of you reading should take this advice in moderation. :p

Many commentators said the same thing about Japan in the early 90s. Japan at least had the virtue of being a functioning democracy (although it's saddled with overly communal tendencies that reduce its nimbleness). The Chinese economy and government by contrast has very poor error correction machinery built into them, which is common to most highly unaccountable governments outside of the free world.

"Holds no advantage"? Please let us know what alternative universe you're living in. It must be a universe where the East Germans did not stage a mass exodus to the west despite concrete walls, barb wire and machine-gun fire. It must also be universe where the mass exodus out of Taiwan in 1997 never took place.

The only way you could make a statement such as yours above with a straight face, is if you get your news from state-controlled media nearly exclusively.

In the interests of avoiding a flame war I'm going to be more opaque in my comments than I would otherwise be on this issue.

Please note that historically human migratory patterns have been away from some of the governments you mentioned as being comparable. Those people that are able to travel, have voted with their feet already.
