Easy to criticize Merkel, Putin and the other chancellors. The true idiots are the NATO officials (Stoltenberg?) and the US to systematically disregard Russia's red lines. These are the real idiots.

Unless, of course, war is exactly what they wanted, which seems to be the case. Merkel COULD have forced the Minsk agreements down the throat of Ukraine and forbid Ukraine in NATO.

This is a more in depth explanation of what it means for Europe to pay for gas in rubles, and its implications.

The above article is still quite superficial. I am interested in learning the specifics, mechanism and implications of the financial sanctions on Russia, specifically the exclusion from SWIFT and freezing of sovereign (in addition to private) assets, and what a country can do protect itself.

China has two "Achilles Heals" right now - semiconductor and international payment system. We already have a thread on China's semiconductor effort. Should we start a new thread on the latter, or there is already one dedicated to the topics ?

China already has bilateral currency swaps with a lot of countries all around the world. If they automated this and made a currency exchange for at least a part of it freely available on the market the yuan could start replacing the dollar in current use.
China has CIPS, UnionPay card network, and soon the digital Yuan.

If Germany had let Ukraine and Georgia join in 2008 then the war would have started even sooner I think.
And Ukraine wouldn't have done better in 2008. Unfortunately we will have to pass this period of brinkmanship again and hope detente will prevail again eventually. But I doubt it.

Had Germany and the EU pushed Ukraine to fulfill the Minsk agreement I also doubt this would have happened.

I think it's just a way for them to shut off the gas while shifting the blame or responsibility to the Europeans. There is no practical way for the Europeans to get rubles in the quantities needed. They would have to sell something like gold in exchange for rubles, because the euros are useless to the Russians as long as sanctions are in effect. That's why they said they're not a charity and not going to give gas away for free.

I would be surprised if they unfreeze the Russian assets in our lifetime. If you look at Afghanistan they are already stealing the assets they froze with spurious lawsuits.
If the Russians manage to catch enough western mercenaries I don't think it'll be too hard to get the money back. The UK is apparently paying Iran £400 million for three spies right now.

Once the war is over, Putin can just say give the money back or your ex-soldiers will spend the rest of their lives digging holes in a Siberian Gulag.

Spies require training and may leak intelligence during interrogation. I bet the Western nations couldn't get rid of those "volunteer" idiots fast enough.
