It is the problem of 1. Democracy WITHOUT a value shared by population and 2. Short sight of the general population.
1. Good example was the Germans between WWI and the Nazi takeover. Lots of people supported the Nazi or deliberately ignored the danger of the Nazis. They would rather to tolerate the Nazi violence than fighting it together with the Communist. The recent German TV series "Babylon Berlin" perfectly depicted the time. The social democrat controlled government spent more effort to crush the Communist than the Nazi because the SD thought they can keep the Nazi at bay believing the democracy system would work against any rule breaker Communist or Nazi. But democracy did NOT work when people are so divided in two opposing camps.
2. Nazi was good in hiding their racial agenda before they took over. Remember NSDAP was National Socialist German Workers Party, a very twisted name that is against Socialism (Marx) or Workers. Lots of people put their support either unaware of it or ignored it because they believes that somebody (the opposition) is responsible to keep the Nazi in line with the rule. This is the fault of the population. The fault are, ignoring the moral/principle of the leader, only vote on short term details (promises in the next few years).
Those Trump supporters in color are just the same bunch like many Germans in the 1930s. A person who has a strong principle would not vote Trump even if he/she dislike Beiden. However most people will be "pragmatic" to choose the bad over the worse.
