Such will likely not be considered an official launch with pomp and ceremony, but it would probably still be milked for some internet bragging value, if not by the chinese navy or the ship builder, at least by internet fan boys.

Agreed, but I think @f3243007008 had a true launch in mind in his post, which i replied to:

It's pretty obvious 003 will not be properly launched in 2020.
I think @Deino wrote a great post comparing with 002 for where 003 is in terms of stage and is a great reminder and trip down memory lane.

That said @f3243007008 is also a new member so chances are he may not have written it with much seriousness or understanding.
Or alternatively he was speculating about the superblock being transported from the current fabrication site to the drydock, and using the word "launch" incorrectly.

And most of us aren't internet fan boys and we recognize what a proper equivalently measured milestone should be, and we know what the word launch minimally means for PLAN and PRC naval shipbuilding standards.

I personally predict a 2022-2023 launch for 003

My best guess too, even if this vessel is surely larger and more complex than the 002 so it might be longer than my guess of 18 months from now on (so about late 2021)

IMO it depends on when the first super blocks are transported to the drydock and how quickly they can get assembled there...

If the first super block is transported to the drydock within the next six months, and subsequent super blocks are all transported rapidly within the subsequent months, then a late 2021-early 2022 launch could be feasible.

But fundamentally 003 should also be a more ambitious carrier design than 002, so I wouldn't put it past the idea that it takes longer than 002 for things to come together.

I also wonder how much of a delay will be caused, because the carrier mockup that does all the equipment and radar testing is in Wuhan.

Why should there be a delay when they are already testing?

By the way, what kind of ship or vessel is this? ... I was more focused on the carrier construction site itself that I missed that one on the pier.

To be precise, not just a very large container ship.

This can be among the largest LNG powered container ships in the world, about 23,000 TEU. 1 TEU = 20' container.

I don't know how many ships they have turned out since last year. CMA CGN also has orders for slightly smaller box ships that are still mega ships on their own right.

Currently China aims to build up the numbers of carriers. So we may not see a EMAL carrier until the 7th or 8th ship. Goal is to surround and blockade Taiwan with about 4 carriers by the mid 2020s.
