I was glued to my seat reading your post, if not i would of walked away :)..........you seemed to of missed the point, but anyway you are really just confirming what i and the majority of people here think, and understand to what the numbers of the Chinese Carriers mean, and for others the confusion only exists in their heads as they are over complicating matters by trying to designate these numbers into Carrier sub classes that even the Chinese Navy, has not officially given to them. All will become clear when further Carriers are built.
I read somewhere that the carrier Liaoning coded 16, it is because it took 16 years from purchase from Ukraine to commission. With that as a starting point, the next is 17 [not in years!], 18, 19 and so on.

Given the fact that the first LPH was numbered "31", I think it's more logical to assume that "16" being assigned to Lioaning is the result of PLAN reserving sections of numbers for certain ships. 31 and above are for LPHs. 16-30 are for CVs. 1-15 are for something else, maybe CVNs. Guess we will see soon enough.

So you are assuming that there would be 15 CV's before a CVN???

Having those numbers available does not mean they have to use all of them. And certainly there is no rule about "you must build one class of ships to a certain number before you can move on to the next class." Chinese destroyers are all numbered between 100 and 200, I don't think they will keep 100 destroyers in service at the same to just fill the numbers. The same goes for landing ships which fall into the 900s section.

That makes sense. And until the pennant number of construction number 003 is revealed, we will have to be patient and have no idea what makes ships 1-15 different from ships 16-30.

We may even have to wait until construction number 004 or even 005 until pennant number # 1 is finally attached to an aircraft carrier.

We poor people, we must be terribly patient - many more years ... diablotin.gif

If there is ever a #1, it will most likely be for ceremonial purpose, not a combatant. 15 (1 to 15) is just a nice round large-enough allocation for future who-knows-what special purpose vessels, unlikely to be assigned for a single class of ships. Plenty of slots beyond 50 or 60 to use for future capital ships.

I'm not sure why everyone expects no. 1 to 15 to eventually be assigned to carriers.

For all we know they might be assigned to ships of no significant consequence.
