Zumwalt is a failure, and mention it in the same context as "example" or "success" is the wrong usage of the words.Zumwalt is a full electric naval combatant:
IFEP can and is done without HTSC, at the cost of extra volume and weight. GE designed the IFEP propulsion system for the world's first full electric naval combatant, the Type 45 destroyer launched in 2006. GE also designed the IFEP system for the QE2 aircraft carriers.
Anyway, the analysis of Zumwalt shown that HTSC motors should double the missile load of the ship. I think it show well the challenges with the full electric propulsion.
And the Ford class still use to the old direct turbine propulsion.
