Project 001: 16 Liaoning
Project 002: second at all and first home-build carrier, outfitting in Dalian
Project ?: third at all and second home-build carrier, Shanghai may be

So shall we rename the two carrier-threads ???

... or some more patience and wait?

I think we can afford to give it some more time, a week or two even.

Ultimately, if it's been confirmed that this new revelation is the way the Chinese are naming their carriers, then it's only natural that we follow their naming convention, because it'll be silly if we insist on using the old (tentative) naming conventions, when the whole Chinese internet are using the new designations.

We're not NATO, who uses some in house codes for other people's gear.

But no rush either, so give it a week or so. Cheers!

Unfortunately, I cannot read Chinese ... :(

The navy originally planned for a conventional (002) and a nuclear flattop (003). After the decision to build another Liaoning, the two flattops were merged into 003, and the ship in Dalian was numbered as 002.

Rest of the posts are about the EMALS and 4th gen birds (J-31 or a new jet based on J-20).

Actually the numbers 001, 002, 003... are internal project codes, not "Type" as in Type 052D. So there is no such things as 001A, 002A, 002B (as in Type 052B, Type 052C ... ...). The internal project code is for one ship only. We have 001 which is Liaoning. Then we will soon have 002 which is being outfitted. The next carrier will be 003, and the next will be 004 so on and so forth. But there won't be multiple ships of 003, as 003 is not a Type.

I think this is the big misconception around here.

What is the 708 jet he talks about in the above posts??? I thought 708 is the designer for carriers???

It's probably safe to say at this point that 001 = CV-16/Liaoning and 002 = CV-17/Shandong, with "001A" being a work of internet fiction.
MAybe...maybe not.

It is what News outlets, all sorts of big and little fish, and people have used for several years now.

Clearly in terms of the way that various systems have been named, when you have a particular class, the class has a number and modifications to the class get a new letter disgnator.

The 2nd carrier is clearly a Lioaning Class ship. it is NOT sunstantially different but does have a few improvements.

There is notre differences between the Type 052C and Type 052D, yet they are stil Type 052s.

So, the new carrier, which may well be CV-17...we will see later...is clearly of the same class vessel as the Liaoning.

The CATOBAR carrier will truly be a new class.

As I stated on the CV-17 Thread...

We have had numerous sources tell us that the vessel is Type 001A and is CV-17:

So, until we have some offical word from the Chinese government or the PLAN itself, we will leave it as is.

If you have a link from an official PRC or PLAN source, please post the link so we can read it, or translate it if necessary.

Until then, we will leave it as is has been being called here and elsewhere for the last couple of years.

The US is doing similar things.

Of these seven project, the US already has the first three developed and in production.

The second three have already flown and the last of those is now in production.

The last of the seven has had significant testing through the RQ-170 and the X-51 Waverider.

So, it is interesting to see how the two navies are planning similar prgraams:
