China-built aircraft carrier to embark on 2nd sea trial

China-built carrier to embark on 2nd sea trial
Outfitting work was completed on China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, Type 001A, on Thursday, making the ship ready for its second sea trial.

The carrier's first sea trial was from May 13 to 18. A military expert said this proves the first sea trial was successful, and that the process could be accelerated.

After a five-day sea trial, the carrier returned on May 23 to the Dalian Shipyard, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, to finish its remaining outfitting work.

A report from wenweipo.com said the carrier has been moved out from the dock and is ready for its second sea trial.

"The carrier's surface doesn't show any big changes, and the outfitting work is primarily for inspection and maintenance. After the first sea trial, the ship's instruments collected data and information, so its equipment must be adjusted based on the data," said Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator. "The carrier can be delivered to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy as soon as possible," Song added.

Although China already has one aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, in service, it doesn't mean the second one can skip steps during the sea trials, Song told the Global Times. "The Liaoning helps China gain experience in testing a huge warship like an aircraft carrier, so it can accelerate the progress for the next one, but progress has to be made step by step."

The first sea trial results for the ship, known as the Type 001A, have been successful, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) Chairman Hu Wenming said on June 21, according to the company's official website.

The PLA used to lack air supremacy in the South China Sea and on the high seas, Song said, adding that the aircraft carrier could help overcome the shortcoming. The ship is China's second aircraft carrier after the Liaoning, and its construction began in 2013, People's Daily website people.cn reported.

carrier set for second sea trial
October delivery rumored; People's Daily claims no single step of further trials will be omitted
By ASIA TIMES STAFF JULY 6, 2018 2:19 PM (UTC+8)
China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier will soon strut its stuff in a second sea trial in the Bohai and Yellow Seas, possibly as soon as this weekend according to Chinese state media, after dry-dock outfitting and adjustments to its hull and propulsion system have been completed.

The brand-new indigenous seagoing airbase, yet to be named and only referred to as the Type 001A carrier, embarked on its five-day maiden voyage in May.

The short lag of a little over a month before the second sail is evidence that the 70,000-ton vessel is making steady, and likely accelerated, headway toward its official delivery to the People’s Liberation Army Navy, with some military observers speculating that a ceremony could be held as early as October.

Another sign of satisfactory progress is the fact that shortly after the first sea trial, Beijing doled out commendations and promotions to cadres involved in the arduous undertaking. The deputy general manager of state-run China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC), Yang Jincheng, who oversaw the design and construction of the carrier and whose purview also included sea trials and maintenance, was recently elevated to a ministerial-level position.

Furthermore, the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po newspaper revealed on Thursday that the carrier’s dry dock had been flooded again at the Dalian Shipyard.

Yet a People’s Daily article on the same day said no tests were glossed over on the new carrier simply to score extra brownie points in national propaganda, and no single process of pre-delivery sea trials would be omitted even though the ship had always been in excellent condition.

“The Liaoning [the PLA Navy’s refurbished training carrier bought from Ukraine] helped China gain experience in testing a huge warship like a carrier, so the shipbuilder CSIC can accelerate the process but all steps must be taken, albeit quickly, and there is no shortcut,” the article said.

Meanwhile the Liaoning is still moored next to its sister ship in Dalian for maintenance, more than a month after the historic occasion when two lookalike carriers appeared side by side for a picture-perfect show of China’s newly acquired naval prowess.

Recent photos showed that radar components had been removed from the Liaoning‘s island, believed to be replaced by more advanced ones.

.

More indication that Type 001A is indeeed still consodered, even in China, a correct name/type for this second carrier.

IMpressive work by the Chinese.

Hope that they get through the builder's trial;s quickly so that the PLAN can take over, put the pennant number on there, and then start slowly testing air operations.

Hey Jeff, do you get nostalgic for the days when we were all 'Armchair Admirals' sitting around arguing with the naysayers that the PLAN would actually put even a single carrier to sea? If only we could email these pictures back ten or more years...

It doesn't matter at what stage China air craft carrier development are at because the naysayers, doubters, and haters will always invent some new excuses.

This picture would have been a REAL shocker for many naysayers and doubters back then.

From my perspective, the day the initial purchase of the old Soviet Varyag was announced (even though they said it was for a casino) I believed full well that the Chinese were finally embarking on their carrier program.

Now we have this as clear proof for the first stage, with the second stage (conventional CATOBAR) coming, and the 3rd stage, (nuclear CATOBAR) to follow that.

But this pic right here would have blown some people's minds back then:

Come to think of it, I remember back in the mid 80s when the first satellite pics of 'Tbillisi/Kremlin/Leonid Brezhnev' on the slip way were leaked to the press along with some almost cartoonish artists impressions accompanied them, If I could dial up my time travelling fax machine (well they would have to be able to receive it at the other end!) I'd be sending these pics and so many others to the boys and girls at Langley and the UK MOD just to stir up a real hornets nest and have the lights burning well into the night at both establishments! We've come a long way...kuzn2.jpg s.jpg 7B0F827C-1370-4273-B571-BEB07AF1C151.jpeg.jpg varyag3_.jpg

Yes, but that pic, a partially launched carrier #2 was as far as the Kremlin ever got.

China has already completely eclipsed that.

Both of their carriers have now been to sea and the 2nd one will continue trials and be commissioned,

The USSR never commissioned to full carriers.

They (at one time) did have four of the jump jet carriers, but they were ineffective in terms of war at sea or even CAS for ground troops. The Soviets were on a similar line as China is now...but they went bankrupt and could nmot pull it off.

China will.

They already have the first two built and I believe they have probably cut 1st metal already and more on the 1st CATOBAR carrier...and I have no doubts that they will build two of those of conventional power and them move on to nuclear powered CATOBAR carriers.

There is no doubt they have the will, they have the funds, they have the plan, and they have the capability.

When their second nuclear carrier is launched some time in the 2020s, they will have six full decked, fixed wing carriers. Only the US Navy has anything like that (and more), but the PLAN will ultimately build as many as they need...and I believe they will maintain a six carrier force for the foreseeable future once they get there.
