"China's first domestically-built aircraft carrier has completed all sea trials successfully, Hu Wenming, chairman of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said on June 19, ThePaper.cn reported.

The ship set out and began sea trials ahead of schedule, completing all trials in advance of its delivery to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. Experts predict it will arrive with the PLA before the end of the year.

The CSIC has made major headway in manufacturing new equipment and applying new technologies; the quality of all key projects is under control and all work is proceeding in an orderly manner, Hu disclosed.

The ship is China's second aircraft carrier after the Liaoning, and its construction began in 2013. It set out to sea near the Dalian Shipyard in Liaoning province on May 13, 2018."

Now as much as my inner fancies will want to accept what these articles claimed to be true. It is clear that this is another incident of egregious reporting based on uncredible evidence.
Did a quick search on The Paper CN and the most recent article regarding the Type 001A was back in May, not June 19 as claimed.
And even without this debunk, even the most illiterate of military enthusiast will know that sea trials are set of long and laborious processes, not just sailing the ship out to sea for barely a month and then calling it a day. If all sea trials were completed, then why wait till the end of the year to hand it over to the PLAN ?
Seriously, these reporters should stop plucking things outta the blue.

I think what the journalist menat is Hu Wenming said on June 19 not that the trial start in June 19
As to outlandish claim of succesfull test, I don't see why not ? Basically the main test of ship propulsion, leak test, structural integrity and ship major system of ballast sytem, control and handling, are completed with flying color

Of course the test is not complete yet but remaining test are mostly on the peripheral system of radar , electronic and system reliability, wire trap etc

Rumor time:
  • Cracks in over 300 places were found merely 7 days after completion
  • Water leaked into the engine and effectively disabled/fried it
  • Cost (of repairs?) was over 7 billion dollars (I'm assuming RMB?)
  • Lead engineer & manager are being investigated

Nevertheless, the original source is apparently a Hong Kong-based source and was allegedly talking about the Soviet aircraft carrier program, so take this new claim with a good helping of salt.

Why stop there?

A DF-41 warhead was accidentally detonated on the same day killing all 400,000 inhabitants of a small inland city and two nuclear submarines in Qingdao port sank due to a mutual collision. The week prior to that, five J-20s all crashed when one bumped into its neighbour during a five-ship formation flying. The SAC factory was also destroyed when a new J-16 being test flown suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure and crashed into the factory complex, igniting the flammable ethyne welding fuel. On the other side of the world, two ships of the 29th anti-piracy task force ran aground with one of them sinking soon after.

Please start using whatever capacity for critical thinking you have and stop wasting our time.

There is still the trials at different load outs. It is safe to assume that the maiden trial of the Type 001A was conducted with an empty hangar with no aviation fuel or munitions stored. So future trials would have to be conducted with the ship carrying stimulated weights of standard and max loadouts.
Then there is the matter of propulsion reliability, that can be possibly tested by having the Type 001A making a trip to to the Hainan island base at flank speed and back again to test how well the engines hold up in various sea states outside that of Shandong.
Finally there is the general issue of seakeeping, testing how the ship rolls about in various sea states is especially important considering how huge the effects would be on a crowded hangar and flight deck, as well as the effects on the crew. Suffice to say, it would be impossible for the PLAN to find all the right conditions of sea states within just a month of voyage, and at all the different speeds and headings.
And these are just the basic requirements, if the PLAN desires to go the extra mile they can also conduct shock trials like the USN to see how well the systems hold out under a stimulated attack.
If what the chairman of the CSIC meant was that the Type 001A had just completed the basic trial of shaking down the various systems for the first time that is believable. But a full physical sea trial would entitle much more than that.
The articles were quite specific to make mention that the Type 001A had conducted ALL its sea trials, which is the ridiculous part.

That is the point, searching through the article relating to the Type 001A on The Paper, the latest one is dated on May. Which is way before the claimed 19 June date.
So these websites are obviously not caring enough to do some proper research.

The People's daily article seems an English translation of The Paper article.

The headline in Chinese said that all tests were completed successfully. It did not specifically say sea trial.

Also, there is the added/extra line of "Experts predict it will arrive with the PLA before the end of the year."

Those might be points that were not claimed in the original Chinese article but is in the English version, which may have cause some skepticism.
