I refer to the positions as starboard = #1, port = #2 and aft = #3 in the direction of flight.

#1 is almost never used, #2 is also very rarely used and #3 is used the most. If you see photos with two aircraft in positions #1 and #2, it is mostly a "parade lineup" from which there will be no take-off.

This also explains the different intensity of the tyre marks at positions #1 and #2.

And if you look closely at the aircraft at position #2, you will see that the tire marks coming from there are not from position #2, but from position #3. The main landing gear is one tire width away from the tire markings, but exactly aligned with the brake pads.

With all due respect, almost all the launches we've seen from the Chinese carriers are from the forward #1and #2 positions.

In fact, launches from #3 the waist position are rare on videos though it is obvious that position must be used a lot for better load.

It is seems for most operations -- which on the STOBARs are qualifying flights for training pilots plus CAP and intercepts as mentioned on some videos -- the two front positions are plenty enough for J-15s to launch from.

Which also belies the power on those aircraft that pundits complained of being underpowered.

The few launches of the MiG-29K video'ed on the Indian Vikramaditya do start from aft position #3.

I wonder if we can extrapolate the ability and efficiency of the J-15 and its carriers vs the MiG-29K and their carriers.

For MiG-29K, this is the "extremely short" takeoff position next to the island. The normal take off position is way back approaching the stern that basically blocks recovery.

The J-15s seem to have enough power to launch from the front two positions and, with blast shields in place, allow for recovery on the angled deck. At least in theory:

CV-16 Liaoning docked pier-side at Dalian after her first post-MLU sea trial. Posted by @香港文匯網 on Weibo.

Looks like some landings and takeoffs were conducted during the sea trial, with the tire marks on the touch-down zone in front of the parked J-15 mockup. Also note the scaffoldings around the island superstructure.

There's a censored mockup ;) and tire marks with seemingly differing wheelbases.

I wonder...
