Wrt the mutual economic sanctions:
My Dutch newspaper has an article from its correspondent in Moscow saying that the shops in Russia will have little trouble with the loss of food previously supplied by EU, US, Canada and Australia. The trouble will mostly be found in shops for richer Russians and even there it will be slight. So there will also be little influence on inflation. Only fish has become noticibly more expensive but salmon is now coming from Kamchatka.
It is of course a boon for South American and Asian countries

No surprise that the big column reported at Telmanove has swept on West towards Volnovakha, while another column which took Elenovka yesterday, bears down on it from the West.
This pincer movement will achieve three main objectives
1) Form another super cauldron to the East of it.
2) Secure the Northern Approach to Mariupol on the direct Donetsk to Mariupol Rd.
3) The continued sweep west will cut off supply and access to the Ukrainian army into Donetsk from all major routes south of Dnepropetrovsk.
4) will push much of the Ukrainian artillery to the South and West of the city our of range of Donetsk.
5) Has created a viable route, even with active cauldrons for resupply and aid from Russia on the shortest possible route, via the Uspenka border crossing near Matveev Kurgan in Russia.
It will also have a rather marked effect I suspect on the existing cauldrons on the Southern Front, namely desperate realisation that the front line to the West of them is expanding away rapidly by the day. What I mean by this is that it is perhaps one thing for a trapped unit to hope for relief or a break out, when there is only ten kilometres of enemy held territory to cross. It is quite another when the distance is fifty kilometres today and likely to be over seventy by tomorrow.
It come as no surprise that Russian media is reporting the recommencing of Ukrainian troops seeking the safety of Russia and that a group of over sixty crossed the border today.
They seem to have come from the little town of Ulyanovskoe, just below the main new Southern Cauldron.
I read with ironic amusement that the column that went via Telmanove is being described as a Russian column, although it also says nobody is sure where it crossed the border. To me that is just a form of spin on that nobody can prove it actually crossed any border. I think a few images will quickly confirm if these vehicles are anything unusual or simply some of the trophy vehicles captured over the last couple of months.
I really am surprised by the speed that things are moving.
I wonder if Jura is ready to concede that the militia are indeed gaining ground now?

well i think that even the most ardent ukraine supporters (i myself am a fan of ukraine also) will admit, albeit with grudge, that this war is not going well for them, provided that they are not completely detached from reality. it is, however, a matter of degree. i went from believing that rebel defeat is imminent to ukraine will implode unless something is done, but not as confident as you are. the rebels are still fighting an industrialized country with western support, i doubt even they are aiming to go all the way to kiev.
the other problem for ukraine here is that if the rebels occupy mariupol they will have de facto control over all of azov sea. with some modifications i am sure they will be able to find ships to transport troops and materials deep behind ukrainian defense. this is a pretty scary prospect.
Kiev was kicking the rebels until Putin led 50,000 Spetnaz and 2,000 T-90 tanks into the fight.
