It also does not factor in details about the "armor Column" assuming thin skinned vehicles like BMD-1 it might be possible.

True, but either way where was the Russian air support from their attacking helicopters supposed to be spotting any enemy armor attack vehicles and artillery?

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says his forces have destroyed part of a Russian armoured convoy that crossed into eastern Ukraine, adding: "We won't tolerate any invasion."

Military officials in Kiev said they tracked the vehicles, including armoured personnel carriers, from the border and then attacked with artillery.

Mr Poroshenko discussed the incursion with British Prime Minister David Cameron, who expressed "grave concerns" at the situation.

Later, Mr Poroshenko tweeted: "At night much of the armoured vehicles which entered Ukraine (have) been destroyed by the Ukrainian artillery. We won't tolerate any invasion!"

Sky's Foreign Affairs Editor Sam Kiley said the attack "is a very serious development" in the four-month conflict, and "could be the beginnings of something much more dangerous".

World stock markets have fallen on the news, with the rouble weakening against the dollar and euro.

Moscow's Defence Ministry denied Ukrainian forces had destroyed a Russian military column, saying no such force had crossed into eastern Ukraine.

It dismissed Kiev's claims as "some kind of fantasy".

The US said it could not confirm whether Kiev's forces had attacked the convoy, but said Russia had no right to send vehicles into Ukraine.

It condemned Moscow's actions as "extremely dangerous and provocative".

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin is due to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Berlin on Sunday to discuss the crisis.

The European Union said it would consider any Russian incursion as "a blatant violation of international law".

Around 23 Russian military vehicles crossed the border near the town of Donetsk on Thursday night, according to journalists from The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph.

This was later confirmed by Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who said it was a "clear demonstration of continued Russian involvement in the destabilisation of eastern Ukraine".

Ukrainian journalist Gregory Zhygalov, in Donetsk, told Sky News Russian military convoys have been crossing into eastern Ukraine "regularly" for the past three months.

He said the difference this time was it was witnessed by international journalists, making it an "incontestable fact".

Earlier, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was "very alarmed" at the Russian military incursion and summoned the Russian ambassador to clarify the situation.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross said it is still trying to verify that an aid convoy from Russia to Ukraine is carrying nothing more than humanitarian aid.

Ukrainian border guards are checking the cargo on Russian territory near the Ukrainian settlement of Izvaryne, held by separatists.

A dozen Russian armoured trucks are waiting with the aid lorries.

Ukraine is concerned the convoy of about 260 vehicles would be used as a 'Trojan horse', allowing Russia to establish a permanent presence in the east.

In an effort to ease tensions, Russian officials allowed journalists to see the contents of trucks.

Among the supplies reporters saw were bottles of water, sacks of buckwheat and portable generators.

Ukraine says it destroyed Russian military vehicles that crossed border
Moscow denied its forces had crossed into Ukraine and accused Kiev of trying to sabotage deliveries of aid
August 15, 2014 2:00PM ET
Officials in Kiev on Friday said that Russian and Ukrainian soldiers exchanged gunfire and that government forces had partially destroyed Russian military vehicles that crossed into Ukraine overnight, events that appeared to signal a major military escalation between the two countries already at odds over contested territories.

Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military, told a news briefing that government forces had spotted a Russian military column crossing the border under cover of darkness.

“Appropriate actions were undertaken and a part of it no longer exists,” Lysenko said.

However, Moscow denied its forces had crossed into Ukrainian territory and accused Kiev of trying to sabotage deliveries of aid and intensifying its fight against pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier on Friday, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance had witnessed a Russian incursion into Ukraine.

“It just confirms the fact that we see a continuous flow of weapons and fighters from Russia into eastern Ukraine and it is a clear demonstration of continued Russian involvement in the destabilization of eastern Ukraine,” said Rasmussen.

Kiev and its Western allies have repeatedly accused Russia of arming pro-Russia separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, and of sending undercover military units across the border.

But evidence of Russian military vehicles captured or destroyed on Ukrainian territory would give extra force to Kiev's allegations — and possibly spark a new round of sanctions against the Kremlin.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko briefed British Prime Minister David Cameron on the incident and told him a “significant” part of the Russian column had been destroyed, according to a statement from Poroshenko's office.

Britain summoned Russia's ambassador to ask him to clarify reports of a military incursion into Ukraine, and European Union foreign ministers said any unilateral military actions by Russia in Ukraine would be a blatant violation of international law.

In a separate development on Friday, Ukrainian and Russian officials agreed to let the Red Cross distribute Russian-donated aid throughout the rebel-held city of Luhansk.

Kiev had previously said the humanitarian aid might be used as cover for a Russian military intervention, while Moscow has denied any ulterior motives.

It shows that the new cauldron in the South is formed, following the DPR's seizure of the Marinovka border crossing checkpoint. It also claims that the breakout squad from Lughansk Airport has been repulsed from the Krasnodon.

I now post the map and full official Novorossiya briefing

Map: Hostilities in Novorossiya, August 6-15, 2014

Translated by Gleb Bazov

Overall, it is becoming increasingly clear that the widely publicized offensive on Donetsk has, as expected, amounted to zilch. The Ukrainian Armed Forces does not have any more strength. It simply does not. And that is all. Moreover, the Junta forces are facing several simultaneous catastrophes on the local scale, which can become operational-tactical in nature and then strategic.

DPR:

The Saur-Mogila Area

The counter-offensive of the DPR forces that began on August 11, 2014 resulted in the DPR army taking control of Stepanovka on August 12, 2014 and then of Marinovka in the morning of August 13, 2014. The Marinovka border crossing checkpoint (“KPP”) was taken over in the afternoon of August 13, 2014. Thereby, the Southern Cauldron 2.0 was formed. As a result, three more armoured-tank groups of the Ukrainian Armed Forces ended up being encircled. Although the Junta troops’ desperate attack on Stepanovka on August 13-14, 2014 resulted in heavy fighting on the outskirts of the village and in the settlement itself, it ultimately resulted in the attacking grouping’s complete rout. So far, the trumpeted importance of Saur-Mogila appears to offer the Ukrainian army no particular solace. This suggests that the widely advertised capture of the strategic height was nothing more than a PR move on the part of the Junta (equivalent to the Nazi Germany installing its flag on Mount Elbrus in 1942).

Snezhnoye-Miusinsk-Krasniy Luch (DPR+LPR)

The situation is under the complete control of the Militia. Although the enemy grouping has not lost its combat capability entirely yet, it has been dissected by the Militia into parts and is fighting on the defensive. Considering the importance of the nearby road intersection for communication lines between the Republics and Russia, the elimination of this enemy grouping has been prioritized. Control over Miusinsk has been fully restored. Krasniy Luch also is firmly in the hands of the Militia.
South of Donetsk

In the last few days, fierce battles were fought in the Ilovaisk area. The importance of this region is that it represents a convenient springboard for an attack into the rear of the Amvrosievka grouping of the Ukrainian forces. On the other hand, the Junta’s contemplated offensive aimed at the encirclement of Donetsk also required the taking of this city. And that is why the DPR Army fought to retain it at all costs. And not only succeeded, but defeated the advancing enemy grouping. Throughout the area, the enemy has been driven back and in the last day showed no signs of activity. It appears that the Junta has exhausted its reserves in this direction of the front (that which was available likely will be redeployed in an attempt to de-blockade and relieve the new Southern Cauldron, opening several important opportunities for the DPR Army).
West of Donetsk

Apart from the foolish destruction of the bus carrying Praviy Sector militants, nothing else happened. In general, there is a lull in this section of the front.

North of Donetsk, Gorlovka, Debaltsevo

Fierce battles were fought here in all the previous days. At first, there were the strikes of the Kiev forces on Nizhnyaya Krynka, the DPR Army’s junction area between Gorlovka and Yasinovataya. Simultaneously, a second strike followed from Debaltsevo on Uglegorsk. This part of the operations was aimed at the encirclement and dissection of the Donetsk-Makeevka-Gorlovka grouping of the DPR Army. Due to lack of sufficient troops the operation became bogged down without reaching its goals. Yesterday, the DPR Army commenced its counter-offensive. Yasinovataya is once again controlled by the DPR. The development of the offensive in the direction of Panteleimonovka will cut off the enemy strike group from the rest of the forces. Near Gorlovka the enemy has lost dozens of armoured vehicles, essentially losing its strike capabilities. Moreover, the grouping of Mozgovoi has started an offensive into the rear of Debaltsevo. As of this morning, battles were being fought on the outskirts of the city. The threat to the Junta in losing Debaltsevo is the creation of yet another cauldron. At the same time, the battlefield here has been radically transformed. The Junta is no longer advancing, but rather is doing its best not to end up encircled in new cauldrons.

LPR

South of Lugansk

The Russian humanitarian convoy awoke the hostilities from hibernation also on this front. The goal of derailing the convoy has prompted the Junta’s leadership to organize an attack on Novosvetlovka-Khryashchevatoye. The goal here is to cut off the remaining open road that enabled the supply of the Lugansk garrison. The initial success (caused by the suddenness of the strike) has turned into a complete rout. As of this morning, the units of Battalion Aidar were crushed in the area of Khryashchevatoye (the Junta has admitted 22 dead and 36 wounded). In the area of Novosvetlovka, the units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (totaling up to a company of tanks and a company of motorized infantry) sustained significant losses (losing up to half of the tanks). Right now, the LPR Army is engaged in artillery suppression and elimination of the entrenched grouping. A day or two, and here also everything will be over.

Conclusions

Whatever one’s attitude may be with respect to the latest resignations (Strelkov, Bolotov), but … it was after these resignations that the general staff of the Militia’s Armed Forces was created, such that it can now properly be called an army. This is so because central command was the one thing that the Militia lacked to function as such. The result of this coordination is already apparent. Moreover, by formally giving the leadership of the Republics a purely Ukrainian appearance, this transformation has provided the Army of the Southeast with the capacity to start solving tasks outside the borders of the Republics. Not only military ones, but political objective as well. The centralization of the military command will also oust the remnants of Makhnovism, which have been discrediting the movement. And so, a radical turn in the war no longer is just fast approaching. It is already visible with a naked eye.

Among the Junta forces, increasingly, it is not the names of regular units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces that we see flash in the briefings, but those of militarized battalions. This is a direct consequence of the losses that were suffered by the Junta troops in the last several weeks, resulting in units of the second line coming to the forefront. This forced transformation immediately aggravated the losses of the Ukrainian strike groups (the example of Ilovaisk is quite telling in that regard). In other words, the most battleworthy units of the Junta have either already been exterminated (the 72nd, the 79th, the 51st, and parts of the 24th Brigads), or are currently blockaded in cauldrons (the 80th, the 95th, the 30th, and parts of the 24th Brigade). At the same time, the militarized battalions that were left holding the front cannot compare to the regular army despite all their patriotic zealotry. In other words, at the front we are observing an equalization of forces not only in terms of quantity (particularly in military hardware), but also in terms of quality (in fact, quality-wise, the Army of the Southeast already has an appreciable advantage).

There is a notable increase in confidence today and the comments about the Ukrainian army running out of steam has resonance. I think it is undeniable that the lack of tangible and verifiable results from the Ukrainian offensive speaks for itself. It also once again calls into question the casualty figures put out by Kiev. If only 500 have been killed so far, how come they have not made significantly more progress than they have?
I am aware that Kiev is being attributed to also saying that there are over 3500 MIA's. If this is true (and there is no doubt where these guys are) then this is far more likely to the reality given the scale of destruction we have seen rained down on them.

In this days of UAV/drones it would be a simple matter to produce photos of this "destroyed" Russian armoured column.

That's not asking too much at all given that Ukraine military has drones.

see i dont know about the revelation of 3500 MIA. should it there be even a modicum of plausbility to this assertion i suspect the russians would have jumped all over it. so far i have not seen that.

the truth is casualty in this war has become a matter of strategic significance in this confrontation, similar to US occupation of iraq. i had once lived in ukraine for a while and i can say with confidence that the majority of ukrainians dont give a rats ass about their country, much less the part in which the population does not identify with it. the willingness to sacrifice in any form (ie family going to war, taxes, bad economy) is simply not there. the only reason that the population has tolerated the war thus far is because the fall of sloviansk has given them a reason to believe that ukraine can win it and do it quickly. Thus, to win the war, the rebels need to 1. cripple ukraine's national morale by inflicting massive casualty against its army and 2. demonstrate to the ukrainian population and the international community that this war cannot be finished quickly, at least before winter. this can be achieved partly through 1.

which brings me back to the point of the strategic implications of casualty on ukraine's side. if there was any reasonable ground to accuse kiev of downplaying its casualty figures, this should be something of significant value to the russians and they would have attempted to use it to galvanize ukraine's public opinion against the war. and the only reason that the assertion of such exaggerated figure was not aggressively propagated would have been because there was no reasonable ground to suspect it.

kiev claimed to have destroyed the russian column with artillery fire. I for one highly doubt that they have such capability, in this day and age, to accomplish such feat. the prerequisite to hit a small moving convoy in an area not under its control is a little steep for the ukrainian forces.

Question: Could you please comment on the status of the delivery of Russian humanitarian relief aid to the people of southeastern Ukraine?

Sergey Lavrov: In the past few days, we have been addressing the humanitarian crisis in southeastern Ukraine, as instructed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. We drafted a plan in cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the representatives of other international organisations, including the UN and the OSCE, and the plan was finalised yesterday. At the same time, we followed all of Ukraine’s requirements without exception, including the route suggested by Kiev, although this route is much longer than the other routes used for delivering humanitarian relief aid. Nevertheless, we have accepted the route which suits the government in Kiev, we have agreed to install Ukrainian vehicle license plates on Ukrainian territory, and we have agreed that not only representatives from the ICRC and the OSCE but also Ukrainian officials should ride in the trucks carrying the humanitarian relief consignment. Everything has been agreed. We have sent an official note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, requesting permission to set out, and the convoy has already set out. Today we received a note confirming that Ukraine was ready to accept this assistance. I hope very much that certain public statements voiced by a few officials in Kiev today that demand new terms will be disavowed, and that they will not hinder the implementation of the agreement reached between the Russian Federation, Ukraine and the ICRC.

ICRC representatives will meet the convoy at the Ukrainian border and in a populated area that has been agreed with the Ukrainian authorities. They will inspect the consignment, and will ride with the convoy to its final destination, primarily in the Lugansk Region.

Question: Does anyone plan to reload the entire humanitarian relief consignment, as has been noted today?

Sergey Lavrov: The issue of reloading the consignment from all 287 trucks onto those hired by the ICRC was raised during our talks with Ukraine. For obvious reasons, they decided against this due to the added difficulty and expense.

As I said, the consignment will be inspected at the Ukrainian port of entry. Representatives of the OSCE, the ICRC and Ukrainian authorities will ride with the convoy. I hope that there will be no complications. Here is one important thing (we are strongly relying on the assurances given to us by the Ukrainian authorities): they guarantee the convoy’s safe passage through the territory controlled by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. Naturally, we expect the resistance forces to act accordingly to this humanitarian project, and we have sent out certain messages to them. I am confident that there will be no mistakes on their part. They are in an area where residents need urgent relief. It is already hard to deny this. The Western media is beginning to offer detailed coverage of the situation, although grudgingly, and to show the horrors facing the civilian population.

Just yesterday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a new bulletin assessing the rather sad humanitarian situation in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions. Thousands of people have been killed, and thousands more wounded. There is no electricity or drinking water, it is impossible to ensure the operation of hospitals, retirement homes and other social infrastructure facilities. Even those who previously voiced a rather restrained stance on these developments are beginning to tell the truth, although belatedly. I would like to thank the Russian journalists who have made a tremendous contribution so that the truth can, at last, resound from the various pages of newspapers, TV screens and international organisations.

Heard yesterday, a british "online radio", who simply jumped at the rumor that Russian armored column that crossed into Ukrainian territory, destroyed by Ukrainian military. I was amused by the manner in which this supposedly popular radio talk-show, was sensationalizing the whole news. Every caller on that radio show, seemed to have blindly believed that the Russians had actually mounted an actual invasion of Ukraine.

The worse thing about this, was the lack of objectivity and investigative questioning to verify the authenticity of such a rumor/news headline.

I could only imagine the pandemonium that must have erupted at FOX News. The rather eccentric and juvenile news channel, must have been raving and ranting about the news, over and over again.

Sometimes I really wonder, what the world would be like, if saner minds prevailed and dominated this planet. Perhaps in such a society, the word "war" would not exist!!

In reality, Ukrainian forces suffered heavy loses in past few days, so they probably slowed down or completely halted their offensive.

Sorry but link removed as far too graphic for a family forum like SDF
