Huh. Thought that's a HHQ-10 CIWS. Also notice the lack of helicopter hangar.

Besides, any idea on the size (650mm or 850mm) and number of VLS cells forward of the superstructure?

Since this is officially a test ship, could just be stand-in component/special test equipment?
Similarly, it could turn that space into a real hangar in production?

Of course anything is possible, since this is not an official class of ships yet.

But using the hanger location for special test equipment is not very likely, since most test equipment can readily fit inside a hangar. If this is close to a production class, and that class is destined to have a hangar, a test suite isn't going to be the reason that the hangar isn't built in.

More likely is that there is no plan for hangar (like in the 056A), and it will continue to rely on shore based maintenance and repair depots. This class, however slightly larger, is still highly likely to be designed to operate within a couple hundred NM from the mainland ports. So there isn't really a large advantage to having a hangar. That space and displacement could be better suited for other types of weapons and/or sensors.

APNews.com page shows that two 056 will be transferred to Cambodia's Navy next year.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodia’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday that China is giving its navy two warships of the type it has had docked for months at a strategically important base being expanded with Beijing’s funding, which has raised concerns of China establishing a permanent naval presence on the Gulf of Thailand.

Ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata told The Associated Press that China would give Cambodia two newly built Type 56 corvettes, smaller vessels typically used for coastal patrols, next year at the earliest.

She would not comment on reports that China also planned to hand over to Cambodia newly expanded facilities at Ream Naval Base, including a lengthy new pier capable of accommodating much larger naval vessels than Cambodia has in its own fleet. Maly did say the final phase of construction would soon be completed.
