Erin Marie Olszewski is a Nurse-turned-investigative journalist, who has spent the last few months on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, on the inside in two radically different settings. Two hospitals. One private, the other public. One in Florida, the other in New York.

And not just any New York public hospital, but the "epicenter of the epicenter" itself, the infamous Elmhurst in Donald Trump's Queens. As a result of these diametrically opposed experiences, she has the ultimate "perspective on the pandemic". She has been where there have been the most deaths attributed to Covid-19 and where there have been the least.

Erin enlisted in the Army when she was 17. She deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Part of her duties involved overseeing aid disbursement and improvements to hospital facilities. While in country she received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service, and was wounded in combat. Erin eventually retired as a sergeant, and became a civilian nurse in 2012. Erin is a medical freedom and informed consent advocate. She co-founded the Florida Freedom Alliance but no longer has any connection with the organization.

Well, the second wave is upon us, as everyone has predicted. The good news is that the second wave is not as bad as I have worried a few months ago, especially considering that we had that huge wave of protests a few weeks ago. So pretty much we have been keeping the peak flat, although we haven't been able to lower it. If we can keep the peak flat for a few more weeks, we might be able to see the curve going down soon... Also, all the previous epicenters are seeing their cases going down, while most of the currently seriously hit places are newly hit places. So I am cautiously optimistic...

Houston's cases are climbing fast though... Our governor ordered all the restaurants can have 75% occupancy now. I personally think it's too fast. If the cases go up as fast as they are now, people will start panicking and it will be harder to convince people to go back out again... It will hurt the economy eventually. Our county judge is now telling us that she might issue another "stay-home" order... I hope we don't have to go there again...

Don't think the huge wave of protests were the biggest contributions of the new cases. California, Florida, Arizona, Alabama, and Texas seem to have uptick in cases predated the protests. Both Florida and Texas are at the tipping point.

It seems the US government has no will whatsoever to confront this pandemic. More importantly, politics has trumped science and logic. We are in a long haul.

Sinovac's vaccine could enter phase 3 test in Brazil as early as July.
Chinese Vaccine Maker Inks Deal in Brazil for Final Testing
  • Sinovac teams with drugmaker in test involving 9,000 people
  • Chinese firms need to test shots where cases are active
China’s leading coronavirus vaccine developer signed an agreement with a drugmaker in Brazil to conduct further testing of its shot’s efficacy, as the global race intensifies to come up with the first viable candidate to prevent Covid-19.

Beijing-based Sinovac Biotech Ltd. is teaming up with Instituto Butantan to conduct the final phase of a three-part human testing of a vaccine it developed against the novel coronavirus, the company said in a statement. A Sinovac spokesman said it will need to obtain regulatory approval in Brazil before conducting the trial.

Once approved, Sinovac and Instituto Butantan will kick off the trial involving 9,000 people in July. The Brazilian drugmaker will get to license the Chinese vaccine and make it available in the South American country, Sinovac said.

Beijing has mobilized its health authorities, drug regulators and research institutes to work around the clock with local companies to come up with the world’s first effective vaccine for Covid-19.

Half of the 10 coronavirus vaccines now reaching the crucial final stage of human testing are developed in China. But that phase requires the testing of several thousand people still exposed to the virus, and the near-eradication of Covid-19 in China makes it all but impossible for researchers to carry out trials there.

Faced with that problem, Chinese vaccine developers have been looking for partnerships in other countries to evaluate their shots’ ability to prevent Covid-19, which has infected more than 7.5 million and killed over 421,000 worldwide.

Brazil has become one of the biggest hot spots in the global pandemic -- with more than 800,000 infections, it has the most cases after the U.S. A vaccine jointly developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca Plc also has been authorized to conduct testing among some 2,000 people in Brazil.

Other vaccine developers are testing closer to home. Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna Inc. is set to conduct the final trials for its vaccine next month among 30,000 people in the U.S.

In an interview with Bloomberg News last month, Sinovac’s Chief Executive Officer Yin Weidong said the company is in talks with regulators in other countries and the World Health Organization to carry out phase III trials outside China.

Another Chinese vaccine maker, Tianjin-based CanSino Biologics Inc., which has developed a vaccine against the virus with the Chinese military, has won approval to test its shot in Canada, but will need to complete the first two phases that focus more on safety before moving on to efficacy testing.

In a further sign of how quickly China is moving to test the viability of its shots, vaccines developed by China National Biotec Group Co. are said to be offered to employees of state-run firms before they travel overseas for work.

Looks like I misread the Chinese there. It appears that the Liaoning cases came from the Beijing cases (not the other way around). So this new outbreak is unrelated to the Shulan outbreak.

Where do you see a 2nd wave?

The USA is still reporting an average of 20K cases per day.
At the peak the USA was at 30K cases per day.

So it looks like the USA is still working through its 1st wave.

Is it possible that this 2nd wave is due to some covert operation from the CIA or MI6. Not likely, but not out of the question either given their capabilities.
