I read the article and as I said, just thingking about charging for testing is not good, much less annoucing just to extending the deadline. It gives a false hope of opening, which doesn't happen maybe even in 5 or 10 years. CCP should prepare to hold well to Zero-covid for as long as possible. Half ass deadline should be avoided at all cost. Any sign of reopening must be abandoned for saving lives.
Why would you think China would need to wait for 5 to 10 years before reopening. It is unreasonable and not doable. Beside, CPC never said that it would maintain zero covid for that long.
More over, Shanghai and many other provinces and cities within China have the same policies of extending free PCR every few months so these kinds of announcements have been around for sometime and not unexpected or unusual.
At the moment, the Chinese government is moving slowly for reopening rather than continue the strict zero covid policies. If it wanted to maintain zero covid, then it would need to impose more restrict quarantine arrangement rather than relaxing it. It would also need to do another round of nationwide soft lockdown in order to rein in this wave of covid.
I do support zero covid but don't foresee the Chinese government to continue zero covid for long as the costs have become much more unbearable. CPC probably is trying to minimize deaths and hospitalizations by slowly moving away from restrict zero covid policies and buying time for better medicines to become available for critical patients.
