Like US and other countries, there's also something like a 'political correctness' in China.
And I would also say, it's prudent and smart to take a step back if you encounter very big resistance and protest to new policies/actions.

Either that or lockdowns seem to be more popular than what the media are telling us.
I guess there's no choice then, the people have spoken and they want zero-covid to continue. So its better to focus on other measures that help mitigate some of the negative impact from zero-covid like helping small and medium sized business adapt into a takeout/delivery model, and install air filtration equipment like this one (UVC-sterilization):
Could also be kind of testing the waters for changes later down the line as well (20th NPC this year it was? Where Xi is poised for a 3rd time).

latest rumor is that Shanghai is back on lockdown? Anyone have confirming information? Sounds like they had over a 100 positive cases in the last day or two.
Shinghai had around 40 cases yesterday (including symptomatic and asymptomatic) Where did you hear it was going back to lockdown?
