Not to mention the fact that the biggest selling point of reunification is not the COVID response.

it is based on military strength.

the article tries to put the onus on China as having to convince Taiwan of something. Why? Because that gives Taiwan all the power. it's much cheaper to simply say "I don't like you" or "I don't approve of you" and have power that way, than to actually have physical power to force someone to bend to your will. What Taiwan wants is disproportional power over China for free.

Exactly. Also, it's an unresolved civil war, so it's disingenuous and misleading to frame it as mutual courtship or mutual consensus. There is disproportionately unequal power between two sides in this unresolved conflict and one side exists solely at the mercy and goodwill of the other side, no need for bullshit approvals or dirt cheap opinions.
